    Hey Guys,
I have a 09 access cab V6 6spd manual. Just got the new bearing/sleeve fix for the squeaky clutch(much smoother). Anyway I digress, sorry.
    QUESTION?
I might be towing using uhaul transport trailer(2210 lbs empty) towing 2004 cruiser.(3108-3176 lbs. The grand total around 5,350'5,400. My hitch sticker came off when sprayed it with black rust proof paint. But before I sprayed it(by accident) I saw that it said MY TOYOTA factory hitch ONLY TOWS 5000LBS. Can it tow a few extra lbs without failing? Any experience?
ALSO, DO I HAVE THE TOW PACKAGE? It is a TRD, and I have new frame from Toyota(june of 2020 and rear shocks @ that time and new leaf packs). My alternator is original, BUT my starter is new(121k miles, now @ 129k, more than likely by the time I tow over 130k).
BEFORE YOU RESPOND PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE REREAD MY POST. Not being smart, but I've posted and some people only answer one thing and not the whole post. I also read a post from maverick on TW about towing very incredible.
    Where am I towing from/to? SD-IL maybe.
thanks so much for the help,
    Brian

Cant tell if you have a tow package but if you have a factory tow hitch is seems likely. Transmission cooler is the most important part to keep your transmission from overheating.

The first link shows class three hitches are 5k, which i believe we all have. Yet toyota has a rating over 6k. Never thought of the mismatch before you asked. I am sure the higher number is the true rating you can use.

    edit;
I think answering all of this with one post is a tough, but you might need to add details, like what is the original equipment. I think the dealer can tell you if you have a tow package

edit 2; ya what the next guy said

Step 1. Go back up to your original post, click the "edit" button at the bottom and delete anything not related to your question. Nobody's gonna read a big old rambling post like that.
Step 2. Go here: https://www.toyota.com/owners ; create an account and put your vin number in - you can find your original specs there including whether or not you have the factory tow package. Mine for example tells me my hitch was dealer installed and I don't have the tow package. I also have a sticker saying 5000lbs and that is all I would tow any distance.

Bottom line if your hitch is rated for 5000 lbs you do not have the tow package. Which means your max factory tow rating is 3500lbs. So if you are towing 5300+ lbs you are way over max tow weight. I personally would not tow 2000 lbs over max rating that distance.
Think of tow ratings like speed limits: Vehicle owners don’t set them; we’re just obligated by law to abide by them. Sure, your truck can tow a trailer at 100 mph all day. But the speed limit may be 55 mph. If you have an accident while towing at high speed, things will definitely get a bit sticky.

Causing a serious accident while towing beyond your pickup manufacturer’s requirements or limits is similar, as it opens the door for legal actions based on negligence against whoever is driving the tow vehicle. It’s not a good situation to be facing.

Max towing capacity should not be taken lightly. Exceeding what your vehicle is designed to tow can strain your engine and transmission, accelerate brake wear, damage your tires and even warp your chassis. This could in turn trigger catastrophic failure while driving and could lead to property damage or serious injury.

I'm not going to look it up, but I'm pretty sure this isn't right. My truck HAS the tow package and the hitch is rated for 5000 lbs or 500 lbs tongue weight without a Weight Distribution hitch. With a WDH the hitch is rated for more, not sure of the limit.

With or without the tow package it doesn't really change how much the drivetrain will pull. The HP, torque, and axle ratio are the same. BUT... the tow package does have a transmission cooler that will keep the transmission cooler. That is the biggest difference, but not a factor with a manual. Another thing to look at is the electrical connector. You need to have a 7 pin plug and a trailer brake control for trailer brakes. If your truck has a 4 pin connector and no trailer brakes you are limited to around 3000-3500 lbs.

But 5000+ is pushing the limits of a Tacoma. I wouldn't pull that much on a regular basis. But if you take it easy, don't plan to pull at altitude or on any steep inclines I think you'll be OK. You probably need a Weight Distribution hitch since you'll have over 500 lbs tongue weight.

The true limiting factor for most trucks is payload. With a 5400 lb trailer you'll have over 700 lbs on the hitch. Most Tacoma's have 1000-1300 lbs payload. If you're closer to 1000 lbs you only have 300 lbs to work with to account for the driver, passengers, and cargo in the truck. Probably no more than 600. You probably won't be able to pull the trailer with much weight in the truck.

very few folks have made a hitch fail.......................

while Ur want many to ‘ REREAD ‘ Ur post to give U permission

to do what U ought NOT to do ..........................

rightly so the ball weight should not exceed 500 pounds

no less loaded correctly after a modicum of effort to balance the load

while its a challenge to the MAX vehicle towing weight

    U wont have issues towing

A gen2 with a tow package is rated by the manufacturer for 6500lbs give or take 100lbs. No way would the factory install a hitch rated 1500lbs below the stated max tow weight. That would be a fat law suit waiting to happen.
There are numerous reasons you shouldn’t tow in excess of manufacturer tow rating. It is just not a wise thing to do.
You can do and add a lot of things to your truck to increase its ability to tow more weight, but no matter what you do it does not change the manufacturers published rating. Only the manufacturer can change the tow rating and once the truck leaves the factory the manufacturer won’t change it. I personally don’t care if you exceed the tow max. Tow 20,000lbs for all I care, just not on the same road as me.
