weight capacity of bed rail system?

Does anyone know the weight capacity of the bed reail system?

 

so if each rail is 200lbs then If I mounted a bed basket on the rails My total weight could be right at 400?

 

200 lbs is the rating but it can't really hold that much. i had around 160 ( my weight) spread around 8 bed tie downs (made a hammock) and the rails were sagging..

I have one bed bar already and have been thinking about making another one and mounting a bed basket on them or a bike rack or something. I just dont know what yet.

 

i thought the capacity of the bed rails was 400 lbs and the tie down cleats were 200?

Kevin, you can run a bed basket. i've been doing it for a long time with plenty of gear in it. If you spread the weight out onto the bed sides, then you'll be fine. I'll post some pictures in a sec

 

i've used this basket since november and just recently re-worked the mounting brackets. the tubing goes all the way across the bed side to distribute the weight and then i have tabs that hang down and lock into the rails. It has room for 8 bolts, but i usually just use 4.

and just think about how much to full jerry cans weigh. I don't usually fill up both, unless i'm going camping or something because one is for water. But i've put that thing through some rough terrain and it's never had a problem.

through my experience the bed rails on the truck are very stout. if i had to do it again, i would do the exact same set up i have now. using the bed sides to assist is the best way to do it IMHO

tying something down to them and fully supporting the weight of a bed basket is not the same thing

 

What kind of bike did you tie to the rails and how'd you do it? I wouldn't have thought to trust the rail system to hold up a motorcycle. I put D-rings up front on the floor and use the factory ones in the back whenever I haul my bike.
