So I’ve noticed a lot of people started putting these rifle cases on top of their roof rack. Just curious to see what do people put in them? I’ve seen camera, tripod, etc. setup. What else?

If you have a picture, please post!

Planning on putting a rifle in mine during hunting season. Other than that, recovery gear seems to be the usual.

Funny topic, I was wondering that a little ways back and was told the same....recovery gear. I guess it makes sense, straps, chains and shackles could fit in a thin case but it just seems like a lot of loot to carry that kind of stuff.

I would never put a gun up on a box permanently mounted on the roof for many reasons, first being it's a pita to get it when it can fit and more secure in the cab....or the bed.

Kind of specific, but I put dirty crap in mine. Some recovery gear, but also muddy boots, shovels, stuff that got wet, first aid kit, can straps and ratchet straps, tools to take apart other things on my truck.

My dogs take up my bed and I keep stuff clean under the my platform because it's hard to clean.

Also I got my plano 42"s for $75 and have taken them through torrential downpours in the PNW and everything was still dry as a bone. You don't need $500 pelican boxes up there

I carry 2 mounted roam cases. Passenger side holds tools, spare parts, and recovery gear since it's heavy a f, trying to balance out the taco lean.
Driver's side holds random camping gear for easy access

Seems like a lot of weight up high, but it’s got to go somewhere.

I was going to grab a couple of Roam or the new Pelican cases for some additional storage space when traveling with the entire family. I stumbled on the Front Runner Typhoon bags this week and purchased two. I didn’t want whatever I got to live up there. They are waterproof and can expand to some degree. Can also fit two Front Runner cub packs in each bag off needed. I’ll more than likely use for sleeping bags and clothes. Should be perfect for roof rack and I got two for the price of one of the other.

It is. But I don't have a lot of space anywhere else to hold it at the moment. Most of my trips are 2 adults and 2 full sized dogs.

I keep tools, compressor and junk in one, and camp chairs, tent poles and misc. supplies in the other. They live on the truck 24/7/365 and I haven't had a single issue.

How do you like those boxes? I'm thinking of ditching the two low profile Plano boxes I have and get something that can fit more stuff like those Roam boxes. How did you mount those to your rack?

I use Ridgid tool boxes, they are $30 each and completely water proof. So if you are just carrying smaller objects you can save a lot of money over using a Pelican case. I have 2 mounted on my roof in one I have recovery straps, entrenching tool, and hitch shackle and the other case has a Spider Smart Tarp (which is a great tarp, I absolutely love it) and some ropes.

I have the Pelican V700 Vault case on my roof. Use it to store tools and recovery gear. Drilled some holes in the bottom and bolted it straight to the rack.

They're good but really pricy for what you get. However, they don't leak and they're solid after a year of 24/7 outdoor abuse.
I drilled 4 holes in each box, ran a bolt from my rack through each hole, washer, nut and silicone around the hole

How do you mount these? Do you drill holes with bolts?

Basically yes. T-bolts or T-nuts, drill hole(s) through case, add gasket, tighten bolt or nut to satisfaction.

I only use mine when I'm camping to hold all the tarps, ropes, stove, and fuel I'm carrying and I take it off the rack when I get home. 1/4" carriage bolts slide perfectly into the Prinsu rack's slots and a rubber washer with a wing nut inside the case and they're mostly waterproof but easy to take off the rack.20200908_140206_HDR (1).jpg 20200908_152215_HDR (1).jpg 20200908_181637.jpg
