Weak brush guard or bull bar? (you read that right)

I'm in need of some sort of brush guard to protect my front bumper from scratches and knicks from briars and tall tree saplings while I drive around on my Mississippi hunting camp (a lot of overgrown brush not bush hogged in a while).

I'm not a fan of brush guards or bull bars in general because of how they attach to your frame and expose your frame to bending and twisting even in minor fender benders.

Three potential solutions in my mind. 1) Get a really crappy brush guard that bends pretty easily. 2) Install a normal brush guard using weak bolts that will snap off under duress. 3) Same as #2 except use normal bolts but hacksaw a couple weak snap-off points in the brush guard itself.

    Thoughts?

Aluminum thin walled brush guard attached with correctly sized shear bolts/pins (but I'm not sure if you can find the correct size or not) is probably the best you can do if you want to go that route.

Brush guards only damage your truck more than it would have been without.

I'd go with 3M protective film or switch to an unpainted bumper cover from an SR.

    I agree,

What are we really protecting? The front bumper is plastic. Unless you intend to wheel hard, crash into things etc, I would just use a protective film.

Another option would be to Line-X the front bumper, they can match the factory paint code. Never have to worry about scratches or dings again.

Driving and pushing over briars and big sweet gum saplings. There's a little risk of a dent or two.

Its always the same debates do brushgaurds help or not ? Well let me tell you I hit a deer on 87 N in upstate NY and just laid it down enough to just run over it. The noise was loud enough to think the front end was fucked up but only had a bunch of blood. So for the people who don t believe they will do anything don t get one but for 500 bucks I think it well worth it. Plus I love hanging lights all ove the fuckin thing.20161106_100142.jpg

You are over thinking this. If you get in any type of accident you are going to fawk your shit up. Hell, I hit a cone and caused $5,200 damage. I would prefer to be behind a plate winch bumper. Hundreds of threads out there about how they saved peoples lives. You have insurance right, you'll be fine.

Not my truck, but a bumper similar to this would probably help, in addition to what Leggo said.

I have the avid bar mentioned earlier, I really like it! I haven't hit any small trees or any thing, but it attaches using the bolt for the aluminum crash bar behind the bumper. It seems pretty sturdy. and I think it looks great.20161014_122306.jpg

I ordered one a week ago. It was just what I was looking for. No need for a winch mount for me, just wanted a little more protection in case I nudge up against something. In a bad crash they will all cause some major repairs.
