I'm an airline pilot and would want to keep my luggage in the back of a Tacoma if I bought one and would like to have it easily accessible as well as waterproof.

From looking on Toyota's website building a Limited Tacoma would this do the job to keep the luggage accessible and dry? Basically mostly make it waterproof and then whatever get's through the luggage would still be dry on the bed mat?

The OEM hard cover...if installed properly....will be 99.5% waterproof. There is always the chance of some leakage. I would think adding a bed matt would increase the chance of water getting on the luggage since you are taking away the bed channels and the water will pool on the mat.

I feel like the water that does get in just drips down the inside of the bed. I'm not sure there's enough spray or force to make it land on the bed mat itself? It'd have to run down the wall, then up the side of the bed mat. at least that's my take.

I put a Diamondback HD cover on mine and it does not leak, plus it locks securely.

I just have a Extang trifold on my '13. I will leak in a blowing rain (like hurricane Milton) where gasket meets rail.

But I have never had any water on TOP of my bed mat.

Any leakage runs down the bedside, under the bedmat (which is held up by the bed channels) and out the drain holes.

I chose this product because it's easy off and on for when it's in the way. PO had installed a Leer one piece hard cover which lapped over all 4 sides and locked well. If something like that is not in your way of doing truck stuff, it's the way to be 100% dry. No seams, no dependency on gaskets for sealing.

I have a cheapo Tyger soft roll-up from Amazon and it basically doesn't leak at all. I just took my time with the installation and made sure the weather-stripping had tight and total coverage.

I'm no pilot, but I do travel a lot and always throw my suitcase back there without a second thought (had the same cover on my 3rd gen as well).

I never wanted a one piece tonneau, as I thought it would be annoying only angling upwards for bed access. I ended up picking this up STUPID cheap ($50 missing mounting hardware that undercover shipped me for like $130). It's super easy, like 2 minutes with a second person to put on and take off. I feel it's pretty secure and have come to love it. There is a gasket at the front of this with a rubber flap that kinda hangs down, i'd say it's 99.5% leak proof like folks above mentioned, might be 100%, just haven't used it enough to notice.

The Leer I had was much like that. It was the need for the 2nd person and then 'where to put it' for a couple days that created my main problem.

Many people who buy a truck have no 'need' for a truck. A Highlander or 4 Runner would work better for many of them.

I missed my canopy. Have a trailer to haul stuff. When the camper wasn't in the truck, it woulda just been too much of a pain to swap canopy on and off, so went the tonneau route. It spends 90% of the year leaned against my shed in the backyard, but it's great when I have it on there.

I have the OEM tri fold and it is definitely not waterproof. It’s disappointing because they went to the extent of including drain tubes which give a level of confidence. I was in a very heavy downpour and there were water drops on all surfaces (sides and bottom).

It would probably be fine for luggage if you put the luggage in the plastic bags they give you at baggage claim.

Just nearly all pickups design and engineering can't make the bed totally dry like it would be if you chose something else but nearly all tonneau covers are fine within reason. Remember there are gaps and holes just by design and the way tailgates fit.

You can seal tailgate gaps, and my Fast-Top purchase had a pre-cut option but it is just gasket anyone can do. Keeping things from the corners and letting the ridges in the bed work should be fine. What I got (Fas-Top) is all of open bed, tonneau and soft topper in one. I like it a lot. I'm not sure of your use scenario or if you have another vehicle but as nice as the new Tacomas are, I'd not want one as my only vehicle. I looked at the Limited for liking AWD but the 5 ft bed only option was horrible. It could not carry what our minivan did.

It is easy to keep small objects like luggage away from corners or edges with some cargo bars. Then it is always under a dry area.

    :)

I went with the DiamondBack SE. Secure and waterproof. I left off the tie-down cleats for a cleaner look.

I like your bronze oxide color. I was thinking about getting that one as well for pro as I want something leake proof but also it's the only one that allows to put the clips where can hold my kaya or fishing rods. How hard is it to take off if I need to haul something and it's in the way? Also are the clips removable as I prefer the flat look until I need them to haul stuff.

I would say about 20 minutes to take off, not super hard but not easy. The tailgate portion folds back easily.

Awesome. Do u have the rail system that can go on the top? Curious if hooks to hold the fish rods and kayaks are easily removable so as to leave the flat look on top unless I need to haul something on top. Definitely interested in that cover.

No rail system. I just wanted something secure that I could park at the airport for a couple of weeks.
