In my quest to start water proofing as much as possible, I am looking for the weakest points first in my work list. Snorkel is first. Next? Alternator? Anyone upgraded their alternator yet? My research found this:

    LSAILON Auto Alternator Replacement
    [IMG]
Next, we have the LSAILON Auto Alternator Replacement for the Toyota Tacoma. This alternator is designed to QS-9000 requirements in ISO/TS 16949 certified facilities for enhanced reliability. The result is a compact and fully isolated alternator with regulators that are completely encapsulated: waterproof, shockproof and ignition protected.

You can try it, but it’s only a matter of time before the bearings or brushes fail. The motor itself isn’t sealed so I don’t see what the benefit is other than to potentially save the voltage regulator, and rather than having it fail shortly after submersion it will be a longer slower death.

If you plan on submerging up to the alternator, it would be the least of your worries even with a snorkel.

The 2005 Range Rover with the BMW motor, had a completely sealed alternator. The housing actually had coolant flowing through it.

that would have some nice benefits, in addition to water proof it also extends the life by cooling the stator windings and keeping temps at the VR lower.

I tried to find information on LSAILON.
Just about all references were to Amazon.
I like Amazon, they have a great return policy and fast shipping.

The lack of reviews or information on LSAILON, has me taking a pass on them.
It’s never really convenient waiting on a warranty, return, or refund while stuck on the side of the road.

It very well could be a good alternator. But I’d need to know more before buying one.

In this scenario, a spare in the back of the truck makes more sense than trying to water proof it.

Can't help but wonder if Humvee alternators are sealed and how,
given it's a military vehicle possibly designed to go through water at times, that also can have a snorkel

some Audis are like that as well. Not sure why.

I have some experience with military Humvees and both the dual voltage and single voltage versions have openings on the case and are not fully sealed. They're pretty heavy duty though.

You can buy sealed brush packs. I just ordered a Michael Singer custom alternator with these sealed brushes.

not sure Ur definition of waterproof

there are Plenty of 12volt DC connections that will function..............wet
    firewall items
    fuses
crotch rot......afterall Ur butt is getting wet if the alternator is gettin wet

later might develop that with.....grey.......or green corrosion over time
careful disassembly + contact cleaner will minimize electrical gremlins

    washing

    rain

    a creek crossing

all another matter than completely submerged

I have no personal experience, but I have watched hours upon hours of Australian 4WD shows. In fact 4WD 24/7 has stated that they find it cheaper to keep a spare alternator with their vehicle on major outings because the only truly sealed ones they could find were for industrial mining. Because of supply/demand these units were usually 10 times more than a standard alternator. Cheaper to keep a spare and just know how to change them in the field (which they've done on several occasions).
