I noticed something a little alarming the other day. Turns out my drivers side rebound clip bolt on the leaf spring was installed with the nut facing in… almost caused a serious fuel tank issue when flexed at some point. Anyone ever see anything like this o_O

I took those off a long time ago on my last leaf pack that I ran for 2+ years with no issue, they have a tendency to come loose and make a racket.

By that I mean I took the bolt and sleeve out, the sides of the bracket still stay on since they're bolted from the bottom.

I hadn’t thought about deleting them all together. Anyone else run like that? Figure I’ll give it a shot…beats a hole in the fuel tank on the trail.

Just the bolt and sleeve, the bracket should still remain attached because it's held on underneath as well

Have you had the fuel pump recall performed? If so, maybe that’s from when they dropped the tank. Just something you might not have thought of.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
Swap ends of the bolt (bolt head closest to tank).
Seems to me there are other threads on this.

This is a commonly known warning in the ICON installation instructions...looks like it can happen to other brands if the clip lines up the same way.

Ironically just switched my clip bolt earlier today. Good thing you caught it early, that plastic layer is thicker than you think but I've seen it gouge almost to the metal.

Just curious, how far did you have to take things apart to get the bolt in the “right” way? Mine is the same with the threads on the fuel tank side and either it flexed up enough or it happened during the fuel pump recall, I’m not sure since I didn’t notice till after. I did put a few stainless steel fender washers under the bolt head to reduce the other end but might end up swapping the bolt around.

Do you have stock leafs? If so then you'll be fine. If not then you should be able to jack up the truck and drop the axle far enough to clear the bottom juuuuuuust enough. My 2018 shipped with a plastic skid plate on the fuel tank, so it reduced the clearance a lot to get the bolt out. I did not want to uninstall the leafs from the shackles because it's annoying to get them back on.

Basically, I lowered my axle as far down as she would go, forced the bolt in the new way/pushed up the plastic skid up as much as I could. In the end I grabbed a socket as it was hung up on the clip hole at an extreme angle and just bolted it in slowly.

People without fuel skids don't really have this issue and I think are fine to just drop the axle.

Pro tip: If you do this and have the skid, just push up the plastic with a jack after you drop the axle...it won't effect the fuel tank and you will make room for the bolt to clear. I did this halfway after trying to screw the bolt at an angle. No need to remove leafs.

Great to hear. I do have aftermarket but will try the way you suggested and with the OR, I’ve also got the skid. I think the the fender washers under the head there is nothing to worry about but if I don’t have to take the front end of the leaf, I’ll make it right. Thanks.

Yeah the washers should to the trick without having to take it out. One thing I did notice - the bolt head is thinner than the nut, so if you're still rubbing with the washers, that extra mm of metal is probably why.

I like the way your mind works brother! I have been eyeing a LRA for a few months know. Silly question, Does the fuel trip computer make the adjustment for the additional fuel?
