I recently went to Zion over the New Years weekend & it was snowing/icy. They said that they plowed and sanded the roads. I’m from SoCal so I’m not used to snowy roads, but from what I understand, you should wash your undercarriage to prevent rust from roads treated for the snow. I drove around the park for two days, should I wash my undercarriage? Are sanding and salting the roads the same?

I wouldnt worry about it if its just sand unless you just want to clean it up. Here in Ohio they salt the roads and also use a brine solution that attacks the bottoms of our cars. I pressure wash mine once a week .

sanding is different than salt. Most in the west don't use salt from my understanding.

A Bidet for your truck.
Yes, wash that funk off. Either with a garden hose or a pressure washer attachment linked above. The longer it sits the more difficult it will be to remove.

Salt and brine will rust exposed steel, as well as melt snow & ice. Salt just adds some grip/traction to ice. Sand could collect in areas, and hold moister…

I’m from the south, I use and have used several diff methods. My truck doesn’t get washed at all during hunting season. 4+ months. After hunting season is over, I’ll take the tires off and rotate them. While I have them off, I do a thorough washing of the wheel wells too. I also pull the truck up on some of the oil change type ramps and get under it with a pressure washer. When all is said and done, you won’t be able to tell the truck has even seen a dirt road.

Another trick I used to do, might be helpful for you, is put a sprinkler under the truck and sit back and wait.

What’s the difference between them sanding and salting the roads? It’s just for traction isn’t it?

So I should just give it a rinse to be safe? I just don’t want to be surprised by any rust or anything I check it out in the future haha

Every year I get under my truck and pressure wash the under carriage because all the salt laid down on the roads around here. If you were in a State that puts anything down for icy conditions then getting under that to wash it down will not hurt it. If anything it will give you peace of mind. Get under there and wash it. 20220104_154115.jpg

The sprinkler idea doesn’t seem to bad… neither does the ramp idea.

Go to the car wash, get on your knees and spray under the truck.

    and it's only Tuesday.

Go to the coin wash and wash the underside of the truck as good as possible. Pay special attention to the inside of the frame rails and box sections. Don't forget hidden areas like the bottoms of the doors and tailgate.

The difference between salt and sand is that salt will chemically melt ice and also rust your truck, sand (or cinders) will give additional traction. Many areas use one, the other or a mixture of both. They may salt a straight section of road and also cinder the intersections and hills.

Sand provides traction. Salt reduces freezing temperature.

If you don't have access to a hose in your garage at home during the winter, do as others suggested and take it to a spray car wash and hose the undercarriage for peace of mind. I spray mine about once a week in the winter
