On the recommendation of a Best Buy associate, I purchased the Viper DS4+ (DS4VP) remote start plus the Viper pre-wired harness for my 2013 Tacoma. I have temporarily installed it to test the functionality and plan the wiring I need to add (tach wire, brake, door lock/unlock). But it does not successfully start the truck. The Viper fob locks and unlocks the doors, but won't start the engine. I get 12V coming out from the DS4 when it should be cranking, but the engine doesn't crank.

After further investigation, it appears as though I need to program the unit...but I'm not even sure of that. Viper has made it difficult for me since I'm not a professional installer. The install tools require you to have an account with DEI.

My truck is an auto transmission 2013 V6 ... nothing too special.

The instructions I did come across don't seem to match exactly with the behavior I'm seeing. For example, their instructions on "Module programming" claim a particular LED sequence, but it never happens even after a hard reset.

Has anyone else gone thru this effort? If I need the unit programmed, I am willing to pay. I just don't want someone else "cutting wires" under my dash. If it has to happen, I will do it.

Thanks in advance for ANY help,
    Steve

Isnt the install included in the price of that at best buy?

Probably...but I didn't buy the DS4 from Best Buy. The associate at Best Buy recommended it, but I bought it from another location. Everything else came from Best Buy (remote, wiring harness).

    Yep, it was!

I am seeing reference to "not connect the keysense wire" for Toyotas. I plugged the DEI THTON4 harness in and didn't think twice about it. I am guessing the keysense wire is in this harness...I am thinking now I need to find that wire and disconnect it.

Anyone have any insight into the keysense wire?

So what your going to have to do is take it to a local installer (not best buy) and ask them ever so nicely if they will program it for you.. unless you know someone who has access to the DEI software and programing cable..

side note you made me sign up just to post this lol

Ok, thank you so much for the confirmation. At this point I just want to know the next step, even if it costs me a few bucks .

Viper's quality better be great...I am not happy with their business model.

Edit: thank you for taking the time to sign up just to post your reply!!!!

I used to install for a living, but I’ve never played with a DS4. If it is putting out 12v on the starter wire the truck should be cranking.

Where does the t-harness plug in and what color is the factory wire that the starter output hooks to?

wait I missed part of your post.

Do you have a second starter output. I e have you set up

It may still need programming but if you see 12v on the output you prob want to look at a second start relay install. I needed for my 09 and my buddy’s 06

I am using the pre-made harness from DEI...I would think they would have connected the second starter output if required. Are you thinking they missed it?

What happens when you press the remote start command, anything? Light flash, siren chirp, LED flash etc?

Lights flash, led flashes a couple different colors, but green when it's trying to start. The ignition turns on (dash lights come on)...it just doesn't crank.

Try putting a key in the ignition and then use the remote start to start the truck. Might be the chip that is preventing you from starting it. I know some guys just zip tie a key to the column.

That's exactly the same idea I had, but no-go. Still didn't work.

I just got back from a local dealer (I wanted them to program the unit for me) and they found out the unit was funky. It is locked to the vendor I got it from and cannot be programmed by anyone else. Therefore, I purchased a new unit from the local guy and will be returning the original one.

I haven't installed the new one yet, but I am willing to bet everything will work fine. I will report back after I try it.

Well, this sucks. The exact same behavior with the new professionally programmed unit. Now I am confident the problem is with the Toyota starting/immobilizer system. Therefore, I am focusing on the keysense wire. In the Viper instructions it states, "Do not connect the keysense wire in the installation...or you will encounter issues when attempting to start the vehicle." I found the keysense wire in the steering column wires, but am not clear on what I should/shouldn't do with that wire.

    Anyone have any info here?

Dont connect anything to the keysense wire. If its in the t harness, dont allow the keysense wire to reach the remote start module.

OK, your reply makes sense. In the 2013 Toyota Tacoma installation manual, there is no mention of 'keysense' anywhere, except to say not to connect it. In the DS4+ manual for a Subaru, it calls out H2/7 as the keysense output...I do not have that pin connected to anything.

EDIT: When you say don't connect anything to the keysense wire, do you mean in the Toyota harness or the Viper DS4? I assumed you meant the DS4 harness.

I mean like don’t hook anything to the Toyota wire. And based on what you’re saying the instructions say, they mean that the H2/7 wire isn’t used in our application.

Sounds like you have that part covered. So need to figure out why you’re not getting it to crank.

Are you using a DVOM to test wires?

Test the starter outputs on the remote start. When you command it to start, are those wires powering up to battery voltage (+12v)?

And also test when you start the truck with the key. When you turn the key to start it, do those wires power up (+12v)?

According to the wiring I found, there are two starter wires. A black/white and a green/black.

For the first time in installing these remote starters, I am admitting defeat and bringing it to the shop that programmed the box for me. Everything you guys have mentioned I have already tested/verified...so obviously it's something else that I can't figure out.

Once I get it back from the shop, I will post here to share what they found. I was getting upset with DEI, but the shop was telling me all of them are moving to this where an authorized shop must be used.
