So my 2nd question of the morning

I put my vin into one of the toyota websites to look up parts

It shows up as 1999 DLX and not SR5?
Truck has SR5 badge on tailgate and has tach in dash

Title is in safe at the house so can't check it
Is this just a glitch in the website?
Is there a code in the vin that will tell?

At this point I guess it does not matter except I want to be sure if I am ordering parts that I get the right ones

Parts for sr5 and dlx will NOT differ. Some parts between prerunner/4wd 6 lug will differ from the 5 lug

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
Kinda Like making a TRD truck just slap on the decals .

OP unless you bought your Truck Brand new off the lot no telling what might be done.

Kinda like looking at a 92 4Runner listed 4x4 5 speed v6 did not get real excited the vin tells me it is a 3.0

    what a surprise to see a 3.4

    I have a 98 dlx sr5......
The dlx refers to the body type....extended cab....

The Sr5 signifies an upgrade performance package....

Other body styles had the SR5 upgrade option available...
All of the Dlx in the US may of come standard with the SR5 kit....

When I go buy parts....I dont tell em dlx...tell I want a part for 98 sr5...and always get right part....
just have to be careful of 5 lug and 6 lug wheel/brake part differences.....

Based on my VIN entered into the link above it is not SR5

I am 3rd owner, brother was second owner so maybe original owner changed some things

    Thanks for the info

SR5 is a convenience package (power windows, a/c, etc...), not a performance package. The 1st gens never had any "performance" packages (unless maybe dealer installed). And even then, not all SR5 packages are created equal. Not all SR5's have a/c, and not all with a/c are SR5's, etc... And I'm not even sure the DLX refers to the extended cab. Years ago, I had a '97 5-lug LX (extracab) with a/c.

Toyota made their packages and models stupidly confusing. It's almost like the secret menu at In N' Out. Any time I've seen someone come up with a "definitive" answer, someone will inevitably post up with the exception, lol.

Honestly, I don't think you even need to specify the SR5. Year, body type (reg cab, extra cab, doublecab), 5 lug or 6 lug, and engine/transmission is really all you need. All other parts are interchangeable.

I think it comes down to the auto parts stores, and how they filter things. I know some ask for trim level, and the system won't let them move on without it. So you kinda end up rolling the dice on the competency of the clerk behind the keyboard...

O'Reilly's doesn't even ask body type, 5/6 lug.
My Double Cab 4WD SR5 with the TRD package is considered "Base".

Yeah, they're one of the worst offenders, but that's pretty common. At least if you select the correct engine, you at least have a chance of getting the right vehicle (2.4L = 5lug, 2.7 = 6lug), although there are 3.4L 5-lugs, too...

I mean, at least the S-Runner is legitimately a different truck (sorta).

One of the reasons I do my best to get my parts (the parts that matter anyway) from Toyota specialists.
