The VIAIR compressors seem to be very popular but I could never find a mount to purchase for it nor any guides on how to make one. With mounting in the engine bay, I also decided to hardwire it and put a switch inside the cab as well as run the air hose to the rear of the truck.

This isn't a true step-by-step guide, but I wanted to share what I did so others who were in the same boat had something to go off of.

    Parts list

I started out using some cardboard to create the template to cut my sheet metal and mark the holes for mounting. Then proceeded to cut the sheet metal to size and threw on some paint for the hell of it.

Here is the compressor installed on the mount.

Once the compressor is installed to the mount, I went and secured it into the engine bay as seen below. I mounted it in the top left corner as there were 3 pre-threaded mounting points. I also used a 90-degree connector to send the hose straight down.

    IMG_0323.HEIC.jpg

Mounted the air hose in the rear next to the license plate. It's a bit off-center because I mounted it up behind a piece of metal to make it sturdier.

Next up is wiring. This part took me a minute to figure out but finally understood how relays and all that fun stuff worked.

I snipped off the ends of the stock compressor wiring so it could be wired to the relay/ground.
The 40A inline fuse cable goes from the battery to the relay. Stock compressor positive wiring goes to the relay, ground goes to ground. Then a 16-18awg wire goes from the relay to your switch inside the cab and that's pretty much it.

Pretty happy with how it turned out. $15 for the metal to make the mount, $15 for the switch, $6 for the relay and used wire I had laying around. Beats paying $150 for the premade mounts. Hope this helps those who are in the same boat I was!

Any concerns with the air compressor and heat from the engine compartment?

Sweet. Maybe I should mount mine up there as well.

I don't think so. People have been mounting ARB compressors in there since the dawn of time. Time will tell.

So far I just keep mine in the bag it came in. I don't off road very often so for now I just hook it up when I need it, but that's a convenient way if you use it a lot

I don't use my a lot, but I just needed more space in the cab, lol. And I liked the idea of having it ready to go whenever, not having to take it out of the bag and hook it up, pop the hood etc etc.

This is a great reason to mount a compressor, saving space is a plus but you can also do neat stuff like this

Any updates on how it’s holding up? I have a 450P that I was planning on mounting much like you did but I found that the P isn’t meant to be in the heat/moisture/dust where the C is built to be mounted in places like under the hood. I see you have a P series, is it doing ok under the hood?

I have an ARB mounted under my hood, the non-portable version. Did you mean to quote @Technique?
