P0440 is a large EVAP leak, if it just came on after getting gas I'd make sure the gas cap is tight, clear it and see if it returns.
If it does you can visually inspect all the vapor lines, filler neck, and charcoal canister for cracks, breaks, or disconnected hoses.
If you can't find anything you will likely have to find someone with a scanner, a smoke machine, and some knowledge about EVAP systems to find it.

You can find the gas cap from online retailers for cheaper. I see it listed as $23 from Toyota Parts Deal (77310-06020 for my 2001 v6). See if your dealer will do price matching if you need it in a hurry.

I thought that sensor might be located in the evap canister diagram, but I can't seem to find it on parts.toyota.com.

I had to replace my whole canister and the sensor a few years ago to resolve this. IIRC, the senor is discontinued for these trucks, but you can find the same part still available for either a Celica or 4 Runner.

This may help you with what the VPS looks like

The VPS is just one part of EVAP system and I personally have yet to see one fail. Large leaks are usually the fuel pump door on top of gas tank or filler neck hoses. EVAP leaks are best found by smoke testing through the green Schrader valve by cannister.
Doing this first may save time and money replacing parts without testing them first. If you live in a salt state you may need a new gas tank.

Just had mine done, cap $33.00, charcoal canisters, install, etc., $748.77, new gas funnel tube to tank and hose, $347.89.
Light has not come back on, expensive at Toyota..I have receipts. 2004 3.4.

8/25/21. Have to add this : Before I had this done, one of the service gals at the Toyota dealer, asked me, that when I fill the tank, do I keep on pushing the gas in after it clicks. That could be a problem, also, after the first funnel tube replacement, the light was off for about one day. After the fix at Toyota, the light came back on, went back, left it, it was the gas cap. The Chinese shit cap I put on looked exactly like the Toyota brand. They did hook it up again, vapors present.
I am not a mech, so cannot comment, except it is over 2 months now, all good.

Is there guide on how to smoke test? What would I need for it and is there any precautions needed for doing this? Does the smoke test help rule out the gas funnel tube as well?

    I'm getting P0441 and P0450 codes.

Hi there. I had the same codes on my 00 2.7. I thought it was one of the sensors on the charcoal unit so I replaced the whole thing. Not it, but wasn't upset about it since they go bad so I was proactive. Next up was the Fuel vapor sensor that's located on the firewall.... Bingo. Solved my problem. I had ordered the last sensor located under the intake but just kept it in the box for down the road. My gas cap was recently new so I knew that wasn't the problem. Parts all came from Rockauto. The fuel vapor sensor is only $20, might start there before getting the charcoal box kit or replacing the Vapor cannister purge valve alone.

Anyone know the Toyota part number for the fuel vapor sensor for a 2001 3.4 4wd ? I checked rock auto but couldn’t find it. I’m getting a P0441 and have tried everything else including gas cap, canister, pcv and grommet, hoses, smoke test. Plus my current sensor looks a little suspect. It has two tubes. the one without a hose seeming to be glued shut. That can’t be original I’m second owner with around 250k. Thanks!

Does this diagram (2 pages) help? I guessed on your frame code (circled) for a 2001.

The letters mentioned are your frame/chassis code, not part of the VIN. You can find yours on the sticker inside the driver door. See below.

There are a lot more diagrams on that site it could be hiding in. Hopefully someone can chime in with the part no.

Ah gotcha. Thank you for the education. Here’s my door sticker if that helps. Never knew there was a chassis number…makes sense.
