Valvoline Instant Oil Change told me my cheapest option was $68.99. Were they trying to rip me off?

I am wondering if these oil change employees are incentivized to get customers to spend as much money as possible. My Tacoma asks for 0W20 and this guy said the cheapest option was $68.99+ tax. Is 0W20 usually more expensive than other blends of motor oil?

This particular employee has worked there for at least two years, so I am sure he knows all about oil. I didn't want to accuse him of lying, but I wondered if he planned to give me lesser oil, and then keep the extra money if I paid in cash. Or maybe he gets some type of employee bonus based on daily sales. I'm also open to the idea that he didn't have ulterior motives, and was just doing his job.

I'm not sure. I know instant oil changes are overpriced, but still. I ended up just saying thanks but that I didn't have enough money with me.

0w20 only comes in a synthetic, so it cost more. Do it your self and you can save a lot of pennies

30$ tops go to walmart and pick up a gal of oil and filter. Simple to do.

I did my first Tacoma oil change only a few months ago. Truck has standard lift, and I still did not need a floor jack or jack stands. Very easy - and very DIY satisfying.

I mean for synthetic oil it's all the same price as far as I've seen. My buddy paid 120$ for an oil change on his Chrysler 300, yes it was as cheap as he could find, and yes he is a nut.

What does a average oil change run anyway?

If you can tell the difference between the oil drain plug versus the transmission drain bolt on a 4.0, there is no reason to pay someone to do something that takes about 15-30 mins to do yourself.

My dad is getting a bit older and less wrench willing than he used to be, so he has developed a great relationship with a real shop and gets his oil changed there. Kinda smart for him to think ahead like that. But he gets a fleet discount with 9 daily drivers in our family.

Wouldnt be using that in my truck as it does not meet the oil spec'd (no energy conserving additives and too thick of a hot weight) BUT, t6 5w-40 is a PHENOMENAL oil for use in wet sump clutched motorcycles.... it goes in all 4 of mine.
