Looked at my owners Manuel today and it says to replace the vacuum pump at 120k miles? This a first lol I’ve never seen this in my other 3rd gen tacomas maintenance booklets.

To the tune of $300.00 dollars plus labor. I’m sure everyone will be jumping right on that one.

I don’t think I’m gonna change it unless there is an issue lol. Wasn’t in the early model year recommendations

Must be something we’re not understanding for them to suggest replacement

That’s not new, that’s been in many owners manuals, though not all of them. It was definitely in the manual on some of the older trucks like 16-18. I wouldn’t touch it unless presented with a problem.

This kind of tells me they’re seeing it fail at 120K or shortly thereafter. Failure is gonna affect the breaking, so I guess they got it listed as a preventative maintenance replacement

I dunno but it’s definitely been in some of them before. It’s been talked about here.

Mine is banging/knocking away so loud it will never reach 120,000 miles.

One good reason to buy an off road over a sport or sr5.

I believe it's listed in either the Highlander or Camry manuals..if I remember correctly.

It's located on the passenger side head. Towards the rear of firewall. Totally DIY-able but there's not much room in that area...so it'll have to be fanangle it out. The only thing to look out for is the matting of the lugs on the camshaft and also keep the O ring in place when replacing the pump.

I think Toyota made a consumable part is because the inside fins of the pump is made out of some sort of plastic.

Look up broken vacuum pump in other make and models and you'll see the fins of the pump will shatter to pieces....causing no vacuum to the brake booster...and or possibly lock up the camshaft that it's connected to...causing even more headaches.

So probably changing oil regularly would help prevent failure and keeping up with coolant changes

No coolant lines. Only oil runs to the pump to lubricate the moving parts. Hence the O ring sealing it to the block.

Here's an old but still relevant TSB on vacuum pump noise issues.

    T-SB-0115-22 (December 22, 2022)

Also, I believe the earlier Camrys with the 4 cylinders were having problems with the vacuum pump. The insides shattered under certain conditions...but Toyota pushed a recall out and revised that vacuum pump. Not sure what they updated..

My comment has nothing to do with Tacoma's but I was looking through a Hyundai Maintenance Schedule and the Power Steering Pump was listed at 90K Miles, never came across that before on any other vehicle.
