    Hello, Folks.

I just noticed this new TSB relating to vacuum pump noise. It pertains to all 3rd Gens, except for ORs and Pros.

I know that the high pressure fuel pump and DI cleaning cycle are chatted about quite a bit. If you think your noise is not related to those, have a look at the attachment.

Note that warranty coverage is only in the 3yr / 36k BtB period.

    Have a good one.

I wonder what internally has changed on the pump?

Also to note the verbiage is "...knocking noise is reduced" reduced? Not eliminated?

I don't know. Maybe an upgraded part?

They updated this TSB to not include the Tacoma back in March. I wonder why. Misprint? I’m taking my truck in this week since it’s making the knocking noise from the rear passenger engine area where the pump sits. My service rep wants to have a look.
Only also makes the noise after pressing the brakes.
If you cold start the truck without touching the brakes it won’t make the noise (e brake applied).

Update: Dealer has the truck and they were able to replicate the knocking noise with my instruction. This was done by driving for a few miles and then afterwards pressing the brakes. The knocking at idle starts and doesn’t go away until you start driving again. Waiting for Toyota to decide what to do next. If this part was to fail then certain driving conditions would allow for safety concerns. One of them being if the pump fails while stopped on a hill in neutral (manual transmission) with the brakes applied. Your foot would be the only thing keeping you from rolling down a hill into another car… worst case scenario it happens when driving down hill at a low enough rpm where the Vacuum pump runs off the electronic motor (not intake vacuum pressure like higher rpm which isn’t an issue) and the motor fails.
I don’t want to be at 125k and have to replace the dang thing because it was a bad part.
Luckily I have like 5-6 videos where I could get it to make the noise (one was emailed to the service tech when I first called to make the appointment) and a cold start video of it not doing it without pressing the brakes.

All in all they don’t have any manuals to compare it to and I think that’s why it’s so hard to diagnose that there “isn’t” an issue most the time with people on here having the same issues but we’re just told it’s normal noise by the dealers. This is different than the taco tick and it’s not the fuel injectors or the HPFP. If it was I’d be more concerned.

There is a strange situation with this TSB. My 2019 has a very loud knocking at idle fully warmed up, some days it's worse than others. I isolated it to the right bank cyl head (with a stethoscope, same exact area as the TSB calls out.) I saw the TSB on Shop Key (Mitchell On Demand) a few months back and it stated it was updated to include Tacoma. The part number called out was 29300-0P040. I called the dealer and it was about 400 bucks, so being past 3/36 I decided I'd live with it knowing it was just the vacuum pump.
I googled the part number one night and it came up on ebay, brand new in the box for 179.00, the seller had 7 or 8 of them. I ordered it and sure enough it's brand new, sealed in Toyota packaging. I have not installed it yet.
Now I just saw this on here today and the part number is different so I went back to Shop Key to look up the TSB and now it doesn't exist for my truck .
Strange shit. Here's a photo of the tag on the box, notice it says "field fix". I'm really curious now, I have to get off my lazy ass and install it to see if it helps. IMG_0155.jpg

The TSB doesn't apply to your vehicle.

Did you read the attachment above because It clearly states 16-23 Tacoma except OR or PRO models.

Ah, I misread your vehicle as being a '19 OR.

But hey, the clear reaction would be a dick. Thanks for setting me straight. :jerkoff:

No worries, I'm more confused than you are on this information seeing the part number is different now o_O.

Shop Key is a subscription I buy through Snap On tools for the shop. It's basically all the OE manufacturers service information made available for the aftermarket (at a price) through Mitchell. Not perfectly accurate but a necessary tool to work on late model stuff.

TSB's do go through revisions sometimes. It's possible something changed in the few months I suppose.

The TSB called for part# 29300-31050. I'm willing to bet the part with "0P0" is old stock pump. I know my current factory pump labeled something similar "0P621-A"

If you do installed the pump. Care to crack the old one open? I'm sure the male lug and female lugs inside the pump are slamming into each other (hehe) causing the loud racket noise.

My dealer told me that TOYoter said the tacomas have the updated PN. They contacted them about the TSB and that was their conclusion. That’s if the pump doesn’t get louder of course. They also mentioned if it gets louder bring it back immediately. I’m done worrying about this for now and I will keep you guys up to date if the noise gets worse for my 22’.

I found the 0P040 part number in the TSB I had seen, I thought it was interesting to see "field fix" on the label as well.
If the new pump is quieter I will certainly be opening up the old one and will post some pictures if I see anything. Chances are everything will look fine inside ....this is probably an issue where tolerances were not correct.

Just chiming in. They updated the TSB back in 2024 August to include the tacomas again. Sorry if anyone missed this, I called corporate and confirmed that REVISION 2 does in fact include the tacomas again 2016-2023. The removed it in REVISION 1 for some unknown reason.
