    Working on it ...
So dig this ... I brought my truck in for its 20,000 mile Toyota care maintenance this morning. While I was waiting for it I walked around the lot. In the certified used car section I saw TRD Sport DCLB That looked exactly like my truck. So I went over and checked it out and it was optioned exactly like my truck. I mean they could have been twins. The only difference, the one for sale was a 2018 with 22,000 miles on it while mine is a 2019 with 21,000 miles on it.

What surprised me was the pricing. The used truck that had 1000 more miles than mine and was a year older was priced at almost exactly what I drove mine off that very same lot a year and a week ago (53 weeks). In fact the used truck may have been a couple hundred dollars more than what I paid for mine brand new back on December 28, 2019.

While I know the Tacoma’s hold their price and have excellent resale values, I found this a little surprising.

Demand is very high right now and production is low due to covid. It’s just not a buyer’s market, and dealerships are taking advantage of it by marking up prices over MSRP on brand new ones because they can’t keep them on the lot. I was lucky to get my ‘21 OR 4x4 in early November for a little under MSRP. I’ve been curiously looking around at my local dealerships the past 2 months to see what’s out there (just to see how good or bad of a deal I really got) and right now all the dealerships around me either have no OR 4x4s at all, or they’re all marked up a few thousand more than what I paid. The only thing I would have done differently is buy a 2020 back in April because they were offering 0% financing around here when the shit first hit the fan with virus and practically everyone was too scared to even go out and test drive a new car, so they were bending over backwards to sell them.

I just traded my '18 DCSB OR w 12k miles on a '21 Pro. They gave me $3k more than i paid when i bought it a year ago (w 4500 miles). I happily paid MSRP for the Pro, and even got some accessories thrown in the deal!

Well done! You got free use of a Taco for a year!

    - With used car prices spiking, and 'regular' new Tacos achieving lesser discounts that usual recently; it really improves the case for the PRO (- at MSRP - no additional dealer mark-up, of course!).
This is true IF you are looking for the Prem & Tech pkgs ... I considered a new offroad in my search, but pricing at the time made the case for the PRO...
    - Things should be improving going forward as things stabilize however...

The dealer keeps hounding me to trade in my 2016 off road AC on a new truck. I bought it less than a year ago as a certified pre-owned. It was a turned in lease with 65K miles. Sorry, no go. I'm keeping this puppy! I got a good price and no finance.

The fed has been printing money like crazy...it’s not that the truck went up in value more like the dollar is worth less and will take more of them to buy it.

This is very true... The Dollar has been losing value against most other currencies for months - hence prices will go up to cover foreign made parts' costs.

    2020 Tacoma TRD Off Road
Market conditions are strong for trades, at the moment. Just traded out of '17 F250 (Gas) for our 2nd "Taco". Bought my wife a '18 TRD Off Road, back in August and she absolutely loves her "Orange Taco". I had a 2010 Access Cab, 6MT TRD OR and liked it a lot and only reason I traded it for a Tundra is I made a stupid call buying an access cab truck and my wife refused to even try and learn how to drive a manual. Have only had my '20 TRD OR for 4 days but so far, I'm happy. I don't notice a big difference between the 3.5 and 4.0, but it's been a while. Power seems adequate for the truck. It is a big change coming out of a behemoth F250 but realized that after 3.5 years of ownership, I never once really needed the size and capability of the F250. My TRD is slightly used (8K miles) and dealer is a local, large, late-model, 1 Price used shop and I have gotten to know one of their buyers fairly well. The don't negotiate price but make it up by giving more in trade that most other dealers offer. They gave me $5K less, in trade value, than I paid for the F250 new in '17. I know most will say they just played games with the trade value, but they only gave me $600 more in trade than they offered me cash to buy the F250 outright. We are at the very top of the used car market and even this dealer admitted he'd never seen anything like it before.....so I got an almost new 2020 Taco TRD 4x4 and put a very nice check in the bank to boot.

Yeah you see this with most vehicles that are within 2 years old on the used car lots. Many times they are more expensive than a well bought new truck. People have been spoon feed the notion of never buy new and slightly used for the best deal. IMO 1 year old on the used lots is always a bad deal with any make of truck. I buy for invoice less incentives which is about 10% below sticker. Ain’t paying more and if the new truck demand is too high from covid just not going to buy, I will wait

1 year ago I traded in my 2012 4 x 4 I4 base cab which I bought new for about $20K (Msrp about $23k + ?) When I sold It, it was cherry ... I only had about 15K miles but I got $12K for trade in and, after the fact I realized I should have tried to hold out for much more Min trade (my bad). The Dealer put it on the lot With out even having to clean it - for "asking Price" of $20K !!!! Same That I paid 8 years earlier!! It sold quickly but I Expect it went for about $15 K. I had a brand 2012 new truck for 8 years and only $8K cost to me !! $2K a year with no repair costs ... Bought a 2020 Ext cab 4 x 4 SR Sx .... Hard to beat... IMO

Paid 31.6k for my SR in 2019. it now has 19k+ miles. My dealer offered me $30k trade in value.

I had to think about it, as I was a bit hot for a 4runner. But since I added a Diamondback cover, I'm pleased with the truck.
I now see it as a very tuff 4x4 car with a very large very secure trunk.

Dealerships make more net profit on used vehicles compared to new, average profit on used is $5K and new is $1500. They push the used where possible, but it’s usually not a good deal. When purchased a 2006 Honda Accord coupe new for $28,500, they had an identical 2003 with 30K miles on it for $27K that the sales guy kept trying to push me into. I’ve purchased some used vehicles from dealers that were good deals, but they were niche vehicles I couldn’t buy new or private party.

I can attest to the low inventory and dealers not willing to deal right now. Toyota was advertising a 39 month 39K mile lease on the 2021 TRD OR DCSB 4x4 (MSRP $38,700) for $2999 down and $229 per month plus taxes/doc fee/registration. I expected a deal that was $4200 down and $250 per month, $13950 all in. I spoke to a dozen dealers in AZ, most of them told me “no, we can sell these for full price” when I inquired. Other dealers were coming in at $4200 down and $375 per month. I had to drive 4 hours to find a dealer willing to do the factory offer. I ended up with a truck with MSRP $41,700 and a lease deal of $4200 down and $265 per month all in. This lease will cost me $14535, the next cheapest I found was $17K, most were $19K+.

For those who don’t like leasing, my wife does about 8K miles per year so not likely to go over. I like keeping her in a new vehicle with minimal maintenance costs. I will use this truck on salted roads and on the beach, with the lease I don’t have to care about long term corrosion. I can’t really mod, but that will save me money in the long run as I usually go full retard.

This is a big reason why I bought a tacoma, they hold their value and why I went with a new OR 4x4 DCSB over a used. The best deal I found on a used one was about 34k with 14k miles for a 2019. A couple thousand more and I was able to get into a new 2021 with 27 miles. I got mine for about 3k under msrp OTD.

Hard top camper...many more to add+
On the Big island of Hawaii..majority of best Fishing, camping , beaches, & hunting areas, need a 4x4’s..
Toyota 4x4 is the most popular trucks...high demands, makes used Toyota’s very expensive...I seen many older years and up plus used 2020 ,costing the same prices as new...
A lady I work , really wanted a new 2019 four runner ( cost $41,000) , could not qualify for a new loan ... but the dealer told her you do qualify for a used car loan,4 runner..she paid $43,000 for a2018...
Not sure why it is harder to get a new car loan vs used car loan..?
Costco auto program did save me almost$1800 dollars...2019 Tacoma 4x4 TRD LB...
Big island of Hawaii ..Toyota’s 4x4’s ...are everywhere...(on this planet)..

The used car loan she was able to qualify for most likely carried a higher interest rate. Typically called subprime loans. Manufacturer financing arms and many larger banks, CU's don't make subprime loans.

Why spend 30 something grand on a third Gen when you can spend 20 something on a second Gen?

10 grand is 10 grand no matter how you justify it.
