As long as you didn't do any sharp turns on dry pavement, you will be fine. You can drive in 4h for as long as you please

When the weather is bad I drive for hours in 4h

If everything is still working, you are probably just fine. There's not much you can do now anyway. :)

Turning while in 4wd puts extra stress on your drivetrain, but doesn't destroy it instantly. In situations where you really need 4wd (e.g. off-road), it's still almost impossible to avoid all bind-up. Surface traction varies and you sometimes need to make a turn on a surface that has fairly high traction (e.g. rocks). It's just needlessly hard on your drivetrain to make turns in 4wd on dry pavement.

Driving in a straight line in 4wd on dry pavement is not going to put a lot of stress on your drive train. It's turning that is the problem. You'll notice that right away if you try to make a sharp turn on dry pavement in 4wd. The truck will resist the turn and then spin the tires. Try it once very gently at slow speed and you might get an intuitive feel for it. What's happening is that 4wd locks the front and rear axle together so that they must turn at the same speed but during a turn the road won't let the axles turn at the same speed. Something has to give; usually it is the tires losing traction and spinning. I'm guessing there are worst things you could do to your truck that Toyota isn't bothering to inform us because they are much more obviously bad (e.g. burn outs, jumps, power slides, climbing the back door in Johnson Valley, etc).

If it’s still rolling down the road it’s OK. Is it ideal? No, but sometimes knowledge hurts in the long run and your components may wear out the very next time you try and use four-wheel-drive.

Yes. You only hurt the 4x4 system if you cause binding (turning on dry pavement). If you're driving straight, all wheels are traveling the same speed so you're not binding it. No binding = no hurt.

One caution, you can engage/disengage 4HI while moving but it has to be below a certain speed speed (I forget the exact speed but I think it is 60mph, look on your sunvisor). 4LO is a different story, must be stopped for engaging/disengaging that.

Look up some videos on YouTube, that will probably help you understand better than a bunch of idiots on an internet forum.

no. it's cool as a cucumber in there.

I don't know why people think they can "wear" out the 4x4 by doing little things like that . It's not like a bunch of wearable parts like clutches, or break pads, or fluid/seals holding it together. It's essentially solid metal gears meshing just like a differential. I mean sure you can wear out metal gears too over time or even the CV joints (the spherical balls and cage), but it's more of like snapping them then it doesn't work at all.... so it would be works good, good, good, boom breaks catastrophically all at once. I guess what I'm trying to say is if you didn't break it by doing what ever you did (driving in 4H on the road, or smashing it over the rocks) then it's probably totally fine... until it breaks completely. . wait what? you get what I'm saying!

My first gen makes this super obnoxious beeping sound and the 4wd indicator light flashes but it will not engage when you try to put it 4hi going more than 60mph. I have a push button on the side of the transfer case shifter. I've used it to wake up a sleeping passenger before...works well.

I wonder if 3rg gens have something similar?

I’ve done more 4wd locked launches when I had my diesels then most could fathom. Every diesel that launches in a 1/4 mile drag uses 4wd. You have nothing to worry about.

Yeah you'll just wear out tires faster than you'll wear anything else out in 4h.

You hurt your wallet when you fill up!

Otherwise, absent of sharp turns, you're probably ok. But try not to make a habit of it.

    Check build thread!
Half the kilometers my truck have on it are in 4H. It'll be fine. 75mph on snowy highways, but going straight it doesn't matter too much what surface you're on. Worst thing that you inflicted was a slight amount of wasted fuel lol.

Here is a habit I have gotten into. When I put it in 4HI, I switch the center combo meter to an obscure screen. As I glance down to check my speed, I am reminded I am in 4HI.

As long as it's not making any funny noises and everything is working properly, you're fine. The system can handle a bit of abuse, I certainly wouldn't make a habit of it though
