Hi Everyone, I hope you can help with this.

I have a 2017 SR5 Non-JBL or Entune. The new iPhones come with a USB-C lightning cable rather than the older USB-A cable. I bought a USB-A male to USB-C female adapter off Amazon and tried to use that with the new cable and the standard USB-A jack in my truck. Now my USB jack does not work. No power or feed is going to/coming from the phone. I have checked several cables (that I know work) and get the same result.

Any idea what is going on with this? Any suggestions on how to fix? Thanks!

For kicks, there are a couple aftermarket plug and play USB ports that will fit right in that slot. Cheap too. Maybe get one and try it out.

Did it charge before? The usb port may just be for interface with the head unit and not for charging my Uncle's 2010 Tundra is this way.

Did you replace the head unit with after market?
If so the power connection to the USB was probably eliminated.

New bidirectional cables like C and Lightning sometimes only work one way when one end is mono-directional type A.

Your new phone may need more amperage or voltage than is being supplied by the port for it to recognize that charging is being requested.

A lot of devices now require "smart charging" that the truck's A port doesn't provide.

No I haven’t changed the head unit, it’s still the stock unit from when I bought the truck. Also it worked fine using an older USB-A cable. The problem started when I tried the USB-C cable with the adapter.

Assuming you haven't tried already, flip the adapter around in the device, I've got an adapter for my phone (A female C male) and it only works in one direction when connected to the device.

Beyond that get a meter to see if the port is supplying power.

If it is then your phone and that port are simply not compatible, your device doesn't recognize it as a charging source due to low current.

The USB jack has a very weak output. It is for playing MP3s off a USB stick, or accessing the vehicles programming, nothing more. It has a self-resetting circuit breaker. If you overload it, by trying to charge a phone, you gotta wait a little while and perhaps turn the truck off before it comes back to life.

in short.......it’s totally useless as a power source.

    This!
Try the port in the center console, or buy an old school cigarette lighter style charger/adapter.

No fuse for the headunit USB, not one that I'm aware of anyways.

In the early days of owning my 2017, I tried to charge my phone out of this USB socket a couple times. Both times I thought I’d blown a fuse, but after some time the port just turned back on. I believe it is protected by a self-resetting circuit breaker, or a digital overload sensor. In both cases, it “fixed itself”.

mine just started doing the same thing, today.... first time since i bought this truck new in january 2017. nothing on my end changed, but just out of the blew that USB port no longer works, regardless of the cable (tried several that i know work). hoping tomorrow it'll be magically fixed. however the truck sat for 8 hours already and when i just tried it again, nothing....

To use mine I have to turn off fast charging in the settings on my phone. With fast charging on the breaker trips and the port goes dead for a bit. Works perfectly with fast charging disabled, just rather slow to charge.

It might be truly dead. I no longer bother using mine as it will charge none of my devices, but it does still work. It trips off if I plug a phone it, then resets itself. Having said that, I have not bothered with it for a long time.

I installed this in the black beside it and never looked back.

thank you! what baffles me though is the fact that this has worked just fine for almost 8 years, and then all of a sudden it just stopped? literally thousands of times i've used it with no issues. been using this phone for a year now. Guess i'll order that new USB. do you know if i'd be able to replace that existing one with this, or is it hardwired to the head unit?

It may be that the power draw on your device went up as its batteries aged?

the factory usb is part of the data system for the truck. I would leave it in place. I added the bluesea unit in one of the available blanks and just wired it in with an add-a-fuse.
