How does this work? Looking at the stock two piece shifter, I’m guessing the lower section is eliminated?

Any cons from those with experience with the urd shifter?

The Core shifter short shifter is quite a bit better IMHO, that said biggest con is more noise.

I have had the URD shifter for 3+ years. It has been flawless for me. The way it mounts is, you remove the factory shifter, mount the ball extension right over top of the factory ball end. Then you put the spacer in between the factory shifter base and the transmission. This raises the shifter up about 1' to reduce the shift throw length. It also does increase shift effort a bit, but not anything to worry about.

So the entire factory shifter is omitted?

No, the URD kit fits underneath the factory shifter. It raises the shifter up. It goes between the factory shifter and the transmission.

Which leads to vague clanky shifts and I've seen at least two threads claiming they broke and or caused major issues.

Ok I get it now. So this just offsets the fulcrum point.

Well dang it, what I want is a shifter that is actually shorter by around 3 1/2” to 4”. Guess it’s diy or stock.

A short shifter refers to throw distance, you want a shaved lever not a short shifter.

Yeah DIY or bust, can't imagine why though.

You might troll the classifieds for someone parting with their stock after they got a short shifter or find one that's got the failing rubber separation issue remove the top hat and weld on an extension threaded to your desired height.

For what it's worth most people want a longer shift stick with a shorter throw.

Kind of curious what you have going on that sparks your unconventional desires.

I might do that re: get hold of a donor.

I don’t have anything particularly exotic going on, it’s just more of an ergonomics thing. My experience is that I just get smoother shifts with this transmission if I hold it right below the knob, which obviously has the secondary result of a shorter throw - so maybe a short throw would give me what I’m after. Though lengthening the stick doesn’t sound appealing to me.

They say in the SCCA you want the shifter to come to you and travel as short as possible to keep as little time hands off the steering wheel as possible.

Im sure. But that’s like 2000 primers and 4 lbs of powder :frusty:
I can see that, makes sense. The thing to do I suppose is try to find someone nearby nuts enough to let me drive theirs lol and see if it solves my problem.

Well, all I can say is that mine has been problem free for 3+ years. Feels and looks factory for the most part. Aside from the shorter throw and slight more effort required to shift because of the reduction in leverage. No noises, no clunking, and no failure. Not bad for $100 on a black friday sale.

Yea thanks for the response. If urd had any in stock I’d prob buy one and give it a shot. Those set screws though - I think I’d have to weld a couple tacks to keep everything together.

Yes, that is how I felt too. URD recommended loctite, but I preferred a slightly more permanent option and staked them with a punch instead.

I've had a URD short throw on my '04 for 15+ years and not a single issue. Locktite the set screw and use a punch dimple the edge. You get used to the extra height pretty quick and it shortens the throw considerably.
