I don't think I've seen any disc conversion kits. This is pretty damn cool. Good price too. Group buy from Taiwan?

Yeah doesn't look too bad at all really. I guess the difficulty would be individually based, obviously, but I don't see it as too difficult. If you do it please let us know how it went and do a review.:D

The video showed a second gen being retrofitted to disc. They use different parking brake cable setup. Wonder how or if their doing the 1st gens.

Trail gear or low range have been selling a disk brake conversion for years.
Uses gm calipers if i'm not mistaken.

Went I went with 4340 chromo rear shafts last year, I inquired with the tech about the conversion kit. He said they sold out pretty quick when they got them.

Sold I told him to go ahead and send me one along with the bigger bore fj cylender.
He said they were out of them at the time, so i just skipped it.

They are keeping the emergency brake, its more like a drum emergency brake inside the disk hub. Here is the install link from UPI that shows pretty good detail. I have been considering the conversion and have not found another that gives an E-brake option.

I did a disk brake conversion on my Ford Ranger. I used junkyard Mustang parts to do it- there's write ups on Ranger forums. Honestly, it wasn't that bad of a job. I had to replace the axle bearings, so I was already taking everything apart back there... but was it worth it? Meh, not really. Gave me a little more stopping power, but for daily driving and some light off-roading, you won't really notice a difference. Maybe if you have huge tires or are towing, but if you're towing that much, you should have a trailer brake.

there are definitely caliper options that offer a proper ebrake. I installed Nissan 300zx calipers which have a mechanical disk (not drum) ebrake on the rear of my jeep.

No one makes a kit that will use them and I don't know what it would take to make them work on the Toyota axle.

You can also use a line lock with the GM calipers but if you lose line pressure you'll lose the ebrake too.

I think the hard part is coming up with brake cables that will work.

Quick google search, there are companies that will make whatever you want for cables.

I can't imagine this would be feasible for a manual transmission? I use my parking break every day :sadviolin:

You'd just have to make your own bracket. Just go out and get a matching 6-lug rotor and caliper, then mount them up to the axle and see where your bolt holes are, then just mock up a bracket. Then you'd have to get custom brake lines with the Tacoma fitting on one side, and your new calipers on the other side.

This style gm caliper would work nicely.gm caliper with ebrake.jpg

Right, it's fairly straightforward if you have the skills to cut/weld the bracket. Since we're primarily talking about bolt ons I doubt they will work with the existing brackets that are made for the other calipers.

I have no idea what 6 lug rotors you would use with the 300zx calipers... They take a thinner, non vented rotor. For my Jeep I ended up with ones from a Geo Metro iirc

My local Napa made a custom SS brake line for like $20 and I just trimmed and crimped new ends onto the parking brake cables.
