Hey. Looking to upgrade my stereo system. I want to get some new speakers and possibly a small sub. Does anybody have any advice on this? What size sub would fit? Brands?

Maybe some problems with doing this?

    thanks in advance

I'd rather not think of all the $ spent :(
There's a lot of options for you. I put JL's in place of my factory speakers and a hideaway behind a rear seat. I put a small RF amp on my JL's. Since I had the door panels off, I sound deadend/proofed whatever. Now I want to do the floors and roof. I'm happy with the sound now even with the factory head unit. The factory paper speakers were crap.

Agree - start with doing the tweeter upgrade. Stupid easy since the adapters are all compatible without having to do any harness or rewiring and they wake the system up quite a bit.

Many folks (myself included) did the tweeters, then this setup for the door speakers. I'm still using the 7" entune head unit to power them with no amp and it's more than loud enough for me with good clarity across the spectrum. Bass is great, but some will want a little sub as well as I have seen on the forum. Some have done just a simple kicker hideaway powered sub and others have gone the amp route and on and on.

I recently did the plug and play tweeters ($100) myself, then paid for a shop to install new door speakers on all four doors. 6x9 3ways in the front and 6s in the rear. A 10" sub and box fit perfectly behind the driver's side rear seat storage slot, and a 5 channel amp under the driver's seat to power all 4 door speakers and the sub. Sounds perfect. I also paid $100 to have them line all 4 doors with Dynamat sound deadening to decrease road noise and boost acoustics. Figured why not since they were going to have all the door panels ripped off anyway. All of the above for $1000.

Listen to a really nice system before you start buying speakers. Do it right or do it twice definitely applies to car stereo equipment. Once you hear what a well done system sounds like with some power, good full-range speakers, and Dynamat; you won't look back.

It's going to be a little trickier for you with an access cab, but anything is possible. @Mr Marv is a great resource.

Not sure about that, but definitely makes since to me to "buy once cry once" when dealing with car audio. Subaru tweeters are the gateway drug. :)

I think Mr. Marv is in Monterey area. He's done a lot of guys in Cali so he may be able to point you in the right direction. You can contact him on Tacomaworld. He knows his stuff.

OEM audio plus. Have it installed in my truck, it kicks ass. It's not cheap, but its legit and blows the stock system out of the water, as well as my roomates jbl premium system in his Tundra.

thats the complete sound system in your TACO? its an OEM audio plus?

Also, will these subs and amps take away alot of space inside the truck? Im hoping to get something small, just enough bass to wake the neighbors.

The company is OEM audio plus. Have their stuff in mine too. They have some different options. Including tweeters, door speakers, and one or two subs. http://oemaudioplus.com/toyota/tcd1600/

The sub fits in the cubby hole perfectly behind the rear passenger seat on the driver side. Has an option for an additional sub for the cubby hole behind the other seat, but it's not necessary in my opinion. The single sub has enough for me. And the amp is positioned under the drivers seat. I love it, and it reminds me of that everytime I get in my truck. And yes the 1500 package includes all new speakers, tweaters, sub, and amp. Every speaker gets switched and it's plug n play. No splicing into any factory wires.

He has an access cab. AC's get an "armrest" sub.

I think the best option for an AC owner if space is a concern is to get an underseat box and combine it with the aforementioned tweeters and some drop in speakers.

OEM Audio plus has video tutorials for installing speakers (which works just as well if you decide to go your own route), so its almost criminal for a shop to charge you to do it.

Kicker Hideaway sub mounted under driver seat. That boosted the sound tremendously because all they need is some bass fill

I went with a taco tunes rear sub setup.... I used fosgate 6x9 and 6inch for the doors and the link posted earlier to the Subaru tweeter upgrade. I had the door speakers in my 17.... the sub has not came yet.. it will all be installed in my 18 when it arrives
