Battery tests says battery is good but anytime it gets below 40° it dies, what's wrong with it?

Starting about a month ago my battery started to die overnight if the outside temp was below 40ish degrees. Then it warmed up for a while with no issues. Then last night the temperature went down again and waabam dead battery again.

When it first happened I went to Advanced Auto Parts to get it tested ,since it is still under warranty, but they said it's still good just needs a charge. So I charged it. The day after I had charged it the battery died again. I repeated this process 3 times. Same thing battery tested good.

Now it's happening again. Got cold, battery died, test says good. What do I tell the hardheaded baboons working that my battery is bad?

    (UPDATE)
I called customer service today and they called the store to talk to the manager. I then went in and talked to the same manager that customer service talked to and he gave me a new battery with no hassle. He said that I should not have been turned away after the third time especially if the full system check they ran came up fine. All is good and now all I have to do is wait for it to get cold again to see if it happens again.

Is there a different store you could go to? Sounds like it's a faulty battery. How old is it anyway?

Consider testing the alternator output to make sure your charging system is good. When you start your rig, you should see about 14 to13.5 volts.

Like everyone else, I suspect the battery...

I got it June 23, 2013. After I went to advance auto parts today I went to O'Rielys and they also said good. While at advance auto parts they did their full system scan and the alternator output is at 13.7 volts and 17.7 amps

Do you have any aftermarket accessories wired to the battery?

I had the same thing happen. Ended up being the battery. But I also had an air conditioner problem that kept draining it. Air conditioner pressure valve gave out and sent coolant everywhere and that finished off the battery. I suspect after a few more jumps or slow charges the battery will give In or the bad cell will show its true colors

I have a CB radio and a pair of duallys wired to an aux fuse box. But after the second time this happened I pulled those fuses and it still happened.

^Good test. I just had my battery die on me. I was so happy. I got a new one for $104 plus tax. :D

I still think you have a bad battery... Don't you just hate it when the problem comes and goes?

Yeah that's what I am thinking too. Having to jump it every other day can't be healthy for it

Its the battery. Certain batteries dont handle cold well. We pull our aircraft batteries before the weekend if its going to be below freezing bc they will lose charge.

Yeah I hate when things like this happen. Except I know when it is going to happen and I'm just angry that they are basing everything off a simple computer test

One of the things they had me do was to pull the negative cable and let it sit overnight to see if that helped. Battery still died, but since they can't confirm that they can't warranty it

You could get a lithium jump pack, and jump the truck each time until the mofo dies completely, or just shell out for a new one and be done with it. :notsure:

Its the cold cranking amps (CCA's) dropping off due to slowed chemical reactions because of the low temperature. Need an ammeter to verify current to starter. Voltage will still show good. Alternator current really not the issue.

Maybe look into a battery blanket if they won't warranty it

I'd start up-channeling through Advanced Auto; manager, regional, see how far they want to take this before giving you a new battery. Start with the manager at your store, if he won't give, tell him you want the number for who to contact regionally, or however they are structured. Explain the repeated failures to the manager calmly on first contact. :notsure: Good luck.

Ive thought of that but I would just buy a new battery first and never return to Advanced Auto Parts

I have been dealing with managers the whole time and have stayed calm. The first three times was a different manager though. I am looking at who is above them.

Its not that I don't want to buy a new one, its the principle of a warrantied product that they don't want to replace.
