I'm trying to replace the aftermarket stereo in my 97 Tacoma, but have come across some extra wires and harnesses that I'm not sure about.

The previous stereo had one black harness connected to the back, the stock harness is gone. I think I can cut this harness off and splice in my new stereo's harness. But there are two other harnesses which are pretty much dead ends. They each are attached to a single stock wire and feed into separate harnesses with cut wires. I'm guessing these were for some previous aftermarket stereo, I have no idea. I'd like to figure out what the wires they attach to are for though. One wire is green/red (mostly green with red stripe) and the other wire is white/green (mostly white with green stripe). Does anyone know? I can't find stock wire diagrams or tables that include these two wires.

Photos are in album link: https://photos.app.goo.gl/ef5deph1Bb4PzaSF6

Thanks for any help if you've seen this and know.

My end goal is to install this new stereo with a reverse camera, so I still need to find the parking and reverse wires, but I really don't think these could be them

Your stock harness is in the upper left of the first photo. I will look for the original schematic with color codes and send it to you.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
Sorry OP you have a mess .

I hate to see poor work like that.

Much easier to use the stock harness and an adapter for every new Aftermarket unit,

*Green /red stripe might be the feed for your dash lights double check with your meter.

*White/Green stripe is the ground for the dash lights double chick with your meter.

This is from the 2000 EWD yours might be different.

Are we dealing with a manual or automatic transmission?? If Auto your wires are all in the neutral safety switch.

Sorry, forgot to hit post on this: Thanks for those sthomson77 - I looked through the schematics, I don't think I really know how to understand them, but the closest I could guess based on p211 of the o52cmtac.pdf is that maybe they're both illumination wires. I still can't figure out how or what they would connect to since in the diagram it shows them in line with each other instead of both splitting from the same source. I guess unless the green/red plugged into some previous stereo unit and the white/green served as the output and does feed to a rheostat.

And thanks Bivouac for the extra details, that's helpful. I came across a similar situation in another forum which points to the same: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f131/illumination-wire-cd-stereo-radio-install-77883/ <edit: forgot to add that yes, its a 4x4 automatic, 2.7, 4cyl>

Haha yeah its a total mess in there, but a good time to clean it up as best as I can while I'm in there, try and leave it better than I found if it possible. The truck i is new to me I've had it about a month so cleaning up and improving where I can. The heater has been making a weird noise from the vents so I thought I'd check that out while I have it opened up too. Turns our the hood to connect the vent was completely disconnected and just pushed off to the side. At least that one is a straight forward fix!

Hi, this radio schematic should be more helpful. Sorry I didn't send it earlier, Steve.

I wasn't sure how to use a multimeter to test, but found this write up with step by step info on sorting it out 12v, 12v accessory, and 12v illumination wires (https://talkaudio.co.uk/viewtopic.php?p=1532622#p1532622). Turns out that both the green/red stripe and the white/green stripe read 12volts with the headlights on, so both are seemingly illumination wires. I used the green/red to wire into my new stereo and just left the white/green disconnected. I don't know why the factory stereo would have had two different wires for illum, but now I have an extra I guess if I need it for something else.

It was nice to get everything cleaned up and labeled before buttoning it all back up. Everything works including the backup camera and while I had everything apart I also pulled the clock since it wasn't working. Re-soldered the connections as mentioned in some other threads and it works now too!

Anyway, I don't suggest taking on a project like this when its 18 degrees F out, but now that its done and now that I have an absolutely clear view of whats behind me I'm glad I was able to get it done. Thanks all for the leads on getting it sorted out.

Now on to sorting out the next issue on the list...
