Hi there, just ordered the Woolwax DIY undercoating kit- very similar to fluid film. My 05 did get a new frame 6 or 7 years ago but has never been coated in New England and is getting a bit splotchy with rust. Wondering if I should sand down and paint the surface rusted areas before applying the Woolwax or if the application will stop the rust from going deeper. Thanks!

Yes, this would be the most ideal scenario. Sand to bare metal, prime, paint, apply wool wax. Just my 0.02.

I don’t know from experience what is better.
I haven’t ever used it, or any other undercoating, on a vehicle frame (yet)

However, here is what the Woolwax website has to say

Can Woolwax® be applied over existing rust? My vehicle is older and already rusted.

Woolwax® can be applied over any existing surface rust. Woolwax® will stop the rust from progressing on contact by creating a film barrier that will prevent moisture and oxygen from getting to the base metal. Woolwax® is not a rust converter or remover. Any heavy bubbling or flaking rust should be brushed off before applying Woolwax®. It is never too late to treat your vehicle with Woolwax®. It may be rusted, but you can do a great deal to stop the rust from progressing with a good treatment of Woolwax® at the beginning of each snow/ice season.

If you don’t want to go all the way, simply getting at it with a good wire brush should do the trick well enough. I’m a bit lazy and that’s what I did once and as long as I re apply yearly I don’t notice and new growth.

Yup, I'd use a wire brush to knock all the heavy rust & any flaking paint off (doesn't have to be down to bare metal). Then apply WW. Your local big box or even Harbor freight should have a variety of different wire brushes for getting into tighter spots.

Technically going to the extreme of sanding, cleaning, prepping, and painting will be better but thats a lot of work. Also you wont be able to get inside the frame no matter what you do, so theres that.

I'm new to this and new to owning a Tacoma.I lost my last truck ,Ranger, to road salts.
Researching products and methods. "Surface Sheild " by Blaster certainly looks like a Great product. Mika

Surface Shield is the new one to market I think. I doubt you can go wrong with any of them as long as you get it on and re apply at least yearly.

I have heard good things about Evapo-rust. Surprisingly only know of a few people here in the NE who use it though. I really ought to buy myself a jug and try it.

So far I sprayed Fluid Film on bottom of my ( inside) tail gate, and bottom inside of one door , especially on the lowest point seam. Did the other door with, spaying surface shield .Testing different products.Waiting to do under truck , but been too cold out.Need 65-70*F and humidity below 60. % per mfg recommendations.
Humidity is important , under 60% or you seal in moisture.

I'm about to make an appt. to get the '22 done with Waxoyl. It's a hardwax that is supposedly a one and done type of application. I'm having an undercoating shop do it. Expensive AF, but sounds promising. It claims to stop/neutralize existing rust (if you have it) also.

The shop I'm going to quoted me $1200. But like I said, they claim it only needs to be done once. It's a semi hard wax, that self heals in the warmer weather. Says it doesn't harm any rubber, plastics, or paint. I Fluid Filmed my '05, and the stuff works well, but is a sticky mess that attracts dirt, and grit, and at least for the first two weeks smells like a gutted sperm whale. I was looking for a comparable alternative, that didn't have any of the downsides, so we'll see how it turns out.
