I noticed the frame on my 2022 trd sport had a black coating on it, do they already have a protective coating on the frame to prevent rust, or would you recommend getting the frame undercoating? I know tacomas had issues rusting in the past but it had been a point of emphasis for Toyota to improve them. Thanks!

Undercoating usually seems to trap moisture and cause rust, l would go with something like Body Cavity Wax or Fluid Film.

then yes a fluid flim or some other oil based undercoat is needed. This isn't a problem with the tacoma though any vehicle needs this to survive any time in those conditions.

lots of threads here. you definitely need to fo something.

everyone aggrees that undercoating creates more problems than its worth.

that meaves two options, fluid film or cosmoline

pros and cons of each but generally coamoline works best when new so if you ho this route need to do it now.

messy nasty job but worth it in the end

Yep, already started the Fluid Film treatment. I seen some spots that needed coated....

If you live in the rust belt, or where its always wet, best to use something like cosmoline, or crc while the chassis is still like new. The other stuff like fluid flim is ok also, but needs to be reapplied as it will wash away.

I was asking because I read this article and wasn't sure about the validity.

"According to Consumer Reports, you shouldn’t bother paying for corrosion resistance undercoating on a brand new car. This is because new cars are built with rustproofing and corrosion resistance techniques. Used cars are a different story.
Toyota uses PVC sealant in panel joints and seams to leave no extra room for moisture and road salt to accumulate. This automaker then sprays the underside of the body in a rubberized “stone guard” sealant. Toyota also gives crevices and seams extra treatment by spraying them with wax."

CR is not a good source for any kind of information. The salt belt will melt any unprotected car new or old. Its basically spraying corrosive acid on the bottom of your car

Rust Check / Krown spray it every year and forget about it. People used to spray used motor oil underneath cars and it worked. Lots of people way overthink undercoating on this forum. The thick goopy black crap that some places spray will rust out your floors, I’ve seen it happen more than once. You want a thin oil spray that creeps. Real undercoating shops drill holes in the door jambs, take your taillights out, etc to get it everywhere. Buying cases of Fluid Film and doing it yourself seems goofy to me, just take it to a professional for 100 bucks.

I get fluid film on the bottom - only one winter so far. I can tell ya that it definitely makes doing stuff to the truck from below... very messy.

Just wanted to add if you plan to do any projects under the truck like a tailgate lock (I did the OEM) - maybe try to do it beforehand. My hands were very sticky and filthy

My first "mod" was having my truck undercoated with Krown. Living in Michigan you have to do something to control the rust. I've also used fluid film with great results.

I bought a new tundra here in connecticut back in 2001 where salt is king, dealer claimed no undercoating was needed as toyota took care of this. Well fast forward 2 years later going on 3, i inspected the undercarriage only to find surface rust everywhere. At that point the cans of fluid flim came out which slowed the progression of rust down. Some years later i get a tsb letter to have the dealer inspect the frame as many were found to be n/g. Turned out i was unlucky and didn't qualify for a new frame. Doing fluid film every year was just enough to still have a decent frame, rusty, but still ok.
I did my 2020 tacoma within a few months after picking it up, spraying the chassis with cosmoline RP-342, just like bmw or mercedes ships their cars out. I recently gave the frame a good look being over a couple years later...still looks great. Only a couple very minor spots around the rear leaf springs needing some touchup.
