Under the hood...literally underneath the hood sound deadening

Anyone add under the hood sound deadening insulation? Recommendations of source? My double cab is super quiet...only sound is the engine when accelerating, not bad but very noticeably competing with radio and/or passenger communication.

If you have not done so already, I added sound deadener to door, floor and back of cab ... amazing difference in road noise.

A few additions to make me feel cool.
Not sure where you live but I would be afraid of the heat you would be keeping in if you did the inside of the hood. Like other have said, doors and inner firewall.

This is 3/4 inch thick insulation made for engine compartments, installed about a year ago. As it is adhesive backed, it was best to cut it in small pieces to cover the hood. I can’t remember the name of the manufacturer, purchased online.

It definitely helped to decrease engine noise, along with firewall, floor and rear wall insulation and sound mat.
I don’t like the look of it, but I’m the only one opening the hood and I’m not displaying it at car shows.

I installed 1/4 inch insulation in one piece using circle clips on our other vehicle, as it had over a dozen small holes in the hood for that purpose.
It’s a 2013, last model year compact SUV where they decided not to include the hood insulation as on all previous model years.
My wife complained of the vehicle being noisy, so I insulated hood, front wall, fenders and floor.

    Speaking of insulation.
Keep your battery warm in the winter and deflect heat in the summer.
Left over from duct insulating. It’s also fire rated by the manufacturer.
I tested it over a BBQ lighter to see what it would do.

Maybe an hour or so. Just used a tape measure for approximate dimensions, then rough draw with fine felt pen and straight edge on the insulation. Cut and trim with large scissors. Peel and stick.

thinking about adding Noico sound deadening under the hood as @OregontoBajaCA did a while back...no fire hazard here?

Yeah, that's another option, but doesn't seem as effective at absorbing vibrations as the butyl rubber Noico uses.

How hard is it to access the firewall from the inside? Does it involve disassembling the entire dash?

I did the under the carpet, behind the rear seat and a thin layer under the headliner. Major improvement to an already quiet interior. Its a huge huge difference, quieter than the wires, now gone RX350 and quieter than our new 4runner Limited.

You can add sound deadener to the hood, however you would need to add a heat reflective or heat blocking material as the second layer.
For the most part, the butyl adhesion on the sound deadener should be enough.
But in the possible case of summer heat + hot engine, causing it to get loose and fall.

The second layer can be a thermal jute, fiberglass with a thermal reflective layer, etc.

    I did this to start.
    Noico underhood.jpg

Noico 80 mil sound deadener under the hood in all the recesses formed by the hood structure and support members and this DEI Underhood thermal acoustic liner mat is going in soon as a full mat, glued backing and push clips where available holes exist in the hood.

Edit: I might add more Noico 80 mil to some more of the structure, now that I look at it again. I'll need stronger front coils!!

I stripped the interior and got up as far as I could under the carpet and up the firewall until I could not reach. I AM NOT removing the dash. That's what we say in group!
