The under hood insulation serves a few purposes
    1) in the event of an engine fire, the plastic retaining clips melt which allows the insulation to drop over the engine and smother the engine fire
    2) sound deadening
    3) protects the paint from heat of the engine
    4) allows the heat of the engine to dissipate

Thats supposedly the main reason for the insulation. To snuff an engine fire

O.K. What material would you use to replace (missing) factory underhood insulation? I have the plastic retaining clips but don't want to pay for a Toyota OEM replacement. Something I can cut to fit?

That eBay link says for 95-00 models, would it fit 01-04 models? I know the hoods themselves don’t interchange but the mat should have more leeway maybe?

I had the same question but just assumed the fasteners wouldn’t line up with anything on an 01-04 hood.

All due respect, I’d rather have the clips that would melt in the event of an engine fire, and snuff out the blaze

I have a 10-lb fire extinguisher in the cab. I don't see how the hood liner could effectively choke off oxygen from a fire. The position it's in when the hood is closed would be almost unchanged without the clips, and air can still enter from below.

Mine fell of long ago and have been running without one for about 8 years. Didn't notice a difference besides less crap on the top of my engine from the old one disintegrating.

I have insurance! If you got a good fire going it might keep the paint on the hood from blistering.
