Uhaul won’t rent me the car dolly for my taco. I can rent the flatbed trailer no problem. Anybody else come Across this problem?

I don’t feel like pulling a heavy ass trailer for a Honda Civic.

Use the flatbed... Especially if the truck is an automatic.

The reason is U-Haul's dollies do not have brakes. For towing a car you want the trailer to have brakes. My Taco pulls the U-Haul car hauler fine with a Jetta on it, even going up and down the mountains but no way I'd try that using a dolly without brakes.

    Why wouldn't they?

    Edit: Brakes, right.

Their online system (and I assume if you call in person their computer) has magic numbers that will go or no-go based on the tare weight the trailer, the car you're telling them you're carrying and the weight and ratings of your truck.

It's probably not 100% right since they want the trailer total weight to be less than or equal to your truck's weight. But the same time if you tell them you're carrying a lighter car than what you actual do you could risk nullifying any insurance coverage you have if you wreck.

I'd look for a dolly with brakes to buy or borrow personally or get the carrier if you can get under their weight restriction.

No, they claim the taco is too light. I’m using my buddy’s pilot to do the job

Had that issue when I was inputting that I planned to tow a BMW 328i. So I changed the towed vehicle to a '94 Acura Integra coupe. Here is a picture of me towing said Integra after obtaining the auto transporter. Hope this helps.

Times have changed! I used to rent that dolly and pull it with an 89 s10 blazer. They never asked me anything, just took my $$. ;)

I’m sure there is some liberal law somewhere causing the red tape. Issue solved, I just used my buddy’s Honda Pilot. He didn’t mind. My one complaint is, it’s too quiet. Almost fell asleep on I-10 in West Texas. My taco with my mud tires keeps me awake.

    Yup!
Ironically, this is the exact car I tell Uhaul I'm towing whenever I rent a trailer from them.
It's only been twice I think, but yes, Uhaul is very particular about which vehicles they will let you tow with, and tow.

Their system is something like "the weight of trailer + towed vehicle must be less than 80% of the tow vehicle weight".
You'll find that you reach the cap very quickly...The trailer probably weighs close to 1000lbs, so not much fits there except an ancient Honda civic when you towing with a Tacoma. The hauling weight only applies to the tow dolly (and perhaps the other car-towing trailer they offer, not sure). The reason they wouldn't ask about a flatbed trailer is they assume it's not for a car.

No, it's cuz the flatbread has trailer brakes.
And there's plenty of cars (think BMW or Mercedes) that you should never tow with a dolly

    I used to own a huge-assed Ford. I couldn't rent a trailer from U-Haul to tow a Dodge Charger. They're ridiculous.

If I ever have to rent from them again, as far as they know I'll be towing a 1980s VW Rabbit. Or a Yugo.
