Wondering... if I'm easing down a nice uneven washed out in places dirt road
while engaged in 4WD (hi) or 4WD (low) and decide to just stop and smell
the roses and turn off the engine before disengaging the 4WD system... is it
    gonna matter -

And if I decide I've had enough and want to see whats around the bend and crank
her up will there be any ramification and further.... will the 4WD system still be
    engaged.

    Won’t hurt anything.
When you turn the truck back on it will still be in 4WD.

If you are IN XYZ Drive and turn it off and on. You are good. Do not worry.

Whatever you do DO NOT select XYZ drive and turn off the truck/ignition at the same time. Or if it’s in the process of changing drive.
It will confuse the truck and leave it in “I don’t know what drive I’m in, I’m just going to walk away”.

In the winter I leave my tacoma in 4wd sometimes for days till the roads get cleaned up.....it's what it's meant for.

I turn my truck off when it’s in 4hi and 4lo all the time. It’s fine. In fact it’s probably worse to unnecessarily switch it in and out constantly.

This is not my understanding of the system (I could be wrong, but I diagnosed a faulty T-Case actuator and dove deep into how this system functions during that process). You can do whatever you want as you're shutting the truck off. Next time you fire it up it will sense the position of the in-cab switch (4Hi for example) and then check that the t-case and ADD actuators are in that position. If not, it will drive them to that position, all on its own.

As long as your system is functioning properly you won't have an issue.

Edit: Yeah, just tested this on my own truck. Switched to 4Hi and shut it off before it swapped. Turned the truck back on and I heard it click into 4Hi shortly after starting.

Double Edit: The more I think of it, it causing an issue doesn't make much sense. Imagine if you or your kids accidentally changed the position of your 4wd selector switch when the truck was off (the same thing as turning off the truck before the switch is made) and then went to start your truck and it bricked/ruined your 4wd system. It's way smarter than that.

If there were a problem doing that your owners manual would tell you. Nothing in the OM, nothing to concern yourself about.
