I'm looking for a little help with wiring up OEM mirror turn signals. I have a 2017 SR5 which doesn't come with the mirror turn signals but I'm interested in wiring in a pair to run in a specific way. I want them to work as running lights (i.e. solid amber when my front amber running lights are solid on), but also as turn signals (i.e. blink when I activate the turn signals and my front amber running lights blink). I've tapped the signal and power wires that activate the "solid" filament and "blinking" filament in my front (incandescent) running lights and run them each through a diode and joined them together to run into the power wire of the mirror turn signals. When the running lights are turned off and I activate the blinker, they blink like I want them to. When I have the running lights on they light up solid amber like I want them to. However, when the running lights are on and I activate the turn signal, they do not blink like I want them to... they just remain solid. I found a wiring diagram here on the forum which basically shows what I did (think its from a 2nd gen though) so I've attached it for reference. I did not include the resistor they have on the diagram because I'm still in the test phase of this mod. I will add one if any hyperflash occurs and I need it. I understand basic 12 volt wiring but I'm certainly not a pro. Any advice is appreciated!IMG_1098.jpg

If you look at the bulb in the headlamp, it has two leads - one for running lamps and one for Turn. The reason you can still see Turn flashing when running lamps are activated is because the Turn filament in the bulb is brighter than running. If you look at the Side Turn lamp, it only has one lead because it's only designed for one brightness. So when running is on and Turn is activated, you won't be able to see it flash because it's constantly getting power for the running lamps. You would need to somehow add logic that if running is on and Turn is activated, ignore the running lamp signal. Not sure how to do that, just explaining why it's doing what it is currently.

Thanks, that does help explain what I’m experiencing. Would probably need a switchback in there to make it do what I’m looking for. I’ll probably wire it up the way it is and just leave them as running lights. I was looking to add the ambers solid for a different kind of look and the blinkers for functionality and since it didn’t come stock with the mirror turn signals it’s not like I’m deleting a safety feature by only allowing them to be solid (i.e. i won’t get dinged when it comes time for annual safety inspection). If anything, I’m more visible than when running stock.

Thanks. I’ll pick up a pair of relays and try that out. Forgive my ignorance, but on that diagram, what are the little ovals?

    Terminals..since the relay has pins...

P.S. You'll need one relay per side. Shared ground and IGN fused source. Separate for the the turn input:rolleyes:

Any reason I can’t use the 12v power from the running lights for the input into 87a? My thinking is that the mirror lights will then be on whenever the amber running lights are on (which what i’m looking for). It will also simplify mounting each relay and running wires since I’ll be tapping the turn signal for the 86 terminal already. Thanks.

where do you plan on hiding and wiring all this? If you keep it CAB all sources are there...
The idea of fused IGN is for the LED's to be ON as soon as vehicle is ON. Even before you release the parking brake, which the DTRL require to be ON. But it's just a suggestion...

My SR5 doesn’t have dtrl. I have the setting on my stalk for running lights (solid ambers on) and then headlights on (solid ambers are also on with this setting). I was planning on hiding the relays in the engine bay near the front (one on each side). I would then run a wire on each side through the firewall, into the door, and up into the mirror.

Your turn signals are not "on" while you drive? I thought that is standard.

As far as I understand, all of the TRD and up trim levels have true daytime running lights. SR and SR5’s do not. Instead they have their turn signals always on solid, and then flash when you turn on the blinker. There are two power wires (plus a ground) running into my signal bulb. Two filaments... one for running lights, one for signal. Does this make sense?

Since you're not using the factory connectors (IK2 &IC3) ignore that here. Tap into 1F @ 7 Right Signal & 6 Left Signal for your signals input. Use an add-a-fuse/circuit on any IGN ON fuse in there. (fuses are below covered)

Yes it does. Those are DTRL, one filament is ON as soon as the vehicle is ON and the parking brake is released, the other filament is the running light. You could parallel that circuit without the relays. Verify that they stay ON when headlights are ON. In the 2nd Gen they go OFF as soon as headlights are selected (the turn signal/DTRL)

I know the signal wires are not there on the SR5 but are the trd mirrors plug and play for the power mirror itself?

I’m not completely sure what you’re asking. I ended up needing to swap out the internal plastic mounting piece that holds the signal in place. My SR5 didn’t come with the right piece but another member with a TRD model was kind enough to send me theirs that they no longer needed after a mirror upgrade. The body-color mirror caps are also something I needed to source for mine

We have a complete set of mirrors with turn signal to put on an SR5. Do the plugs match to power the mirror? I know the signal wires are not there.

Yeah, should be plug and play in terms of the wiring for the power control of the mirrors and the heated mirror function. I don’t know anything about BSM since mine don’t have that function.

How did this project turn out?

Did you use OEM mirrors with turn signals built in? I would like to do this mod as well.
