No, but 4th gen gets better mpg in theory, so let's say it gets 4 mpg better than 3rd gen.
And let's assume you'll need turbo or hybrid battery replacement after 150k miles
the gas saving alone is about $6k evaluated in today's price
that should help with compensating turbo/hybrid repairs. And you get a better tech/power truck, so in the end upgrading to 4th gen is worth it.

The Turbo 4 GM Twins are roughly the same or slightly better than outgoing V6's depending on Trim levels, expecting minor gains from the Tacoma too.

if they can manage 2mpg better, that's still a sizable gas saving over 150k miles, but definitely not enough to cover half of turbo/hybrid battery replacement cost.

I'm 99% sure that 4th gen can use regular, and possibly adapt to premium for more horsepower
    Tundra use regular

Interesting. I'm glad Toyota isn't doing an Xtra Cab MT option, I'd be scrambling to sell my Turd Gen right now. They saved me all the stress.

My Kia hybrid batteries are 6 years old and are volt readings are still spot on. No drop in voltage yet.

I doubt the turbo four will be less reliable than the 2gr-fks.

Typically turbo engines don't require premium fuel. Unless it's a sports car.

Maintain it properly and it will last just as long as any other Toyota. I still see early Prius's around.

Turbos spin at very high rpm's, and due to the heat most don't have ball bearings but bronze (or similar) bushings. These bushings depend on a perfect oil film for spinning parts of the turbo to not damage the bushings.

Turbos run a lot of miles on big-rigs (as does the entire motor), but those turbos don't spin nearly as fast...yet still have to be rebuilt before other parts of the motor.

The auto manufacturers are complying with government-mandated standards, and what they once resisted they now embrace. Because they know these turbo motors will not run as many miles before requiring service ($$), with most customers probably trading-off for new.

    Win-win for the car companies.

I think a similar idea has been at work with Toyota and their truck frames with such strong propensity for rust! Toyota knows the rest of the vehicle is going to run forever, so they gotta make something the weak link---to force the customer in for repairs or upgrade.

Now the EPA has handed the car companies a new weak link: the turbocharger.

And with this maybe Toyota will finally take their truck and SUV frames seriously...

CAFE standards mandate 8% increases in efficiency every year, it's got nothing to do with performance or longevity. All about efficiency.

So the turbo won’t put any unwanted stress on the engine and I can get 300K out of the hybrid battery? Really?

Over the past 30 years I have owned a total of 3 Toyota trucks. Other than brakes and tires I needed to replace one water pump and one cat converter. That’s pretty damn reliable if you ask me. Just afraid those days are gone for good. Tell me i am wrong.

How much experience do you have with turbo engines and hybrid batteries?

Turbos put unwanted stress on an engine when they are modified beyond their design. and the battery pack may or may not have to be replaced once. If you're not confident of modern Toyota reliability then don't buy one. I don't expect it to be maintenance free and those that do are naive. Myself I plan to wait for the BEV Tacoma. That'll be more reliable than any ICE Toyota truck.

How much to rebuild a turbo and replace a battery pack? Seems like a valid concern but……….

Well if it's anything like Tesla, more than the value of the vehicle when it finally needs to be changed! That's my biggest hesitation to turbos and hybrids/electric. Can't afford new vehicles constantly, not enough long term use to justify buying one right now. Time will tell, just not on my dime.
