Anyone have thoughts/facts/feelings about what the stock stereo on a '22 SR5 can handle as far as .mp3's on a USB stick?

I am coming from a 2016 Nissan Altima that was pretty limited in this area and have over 20k that I am hoping the Taco will handle without sorting out to individual drives.

    Thank you in advance!

People use thumb drives. I do not know the specifics though.

    Have you tried it?

I used to use a USB drive to hold all of my music on when I had my old '08 Mecury with Microsoft Sync (still by far my favorite infotainment system). But after getting my Tucson and now my Tacoma with Android Auto, I just used what is on my phone with that.

While I'm sure you can play music from a USB drive, I'm willing to bet you'll have to browse through it and select stuff manually, where if you go through Android Auto, it will break everything out for you and give you different listening options that will make it easier to find and play what you're looking for while driving.

    Oh look, another mod....

I have been playing tunes from my USB drive for years. I have a 16 gig mini thumb drive and my Tacoma Entune/JBL radio plays them juuuuuuuuust fine. It even gives me the option to sort them by Genre, Artist, Track Number, Song, Folder, Album Title, etc...

You are incorrect, sir! I can select Random, Auto Shuffle, Repeat, Next Track. There are quite a few features when using the USB drive in your Taco.

I don't use it in my Taco because I have SiriusXM, but in my Rav4 where I didn't have it I used a thumb drive that was always plugged in and all of the functionality worked just fine. I seem to remember there was a limit on the size drive it would read but I never exceeded it apparently.

Oh, one more thing, make sure your USB drive is formatted for Fat32. The Entune radio doesn't like NTFS or ExFat.

I play music off a USB stick most of the time. I use a 64gb stick, but I'm not sure how many songs are actually on it; several thousand but probably not 20k.
My only issue/complaint is that when I choose to listen to a specific album, it plays the songs alphabetically instead of in the correct track order. One could rename all the tracks to be 01Name, 02Name, 03Name, etc. But I don't want to do that.
So for me I usually just use the USB stick for when I don't care about listening to anything specific and set it to Random. I use my phone via bluetooth or Android Auto when I want to listen to a specific album in the correct order.

What I meant was the features that Android Auto and Microsoft Sync offers...like playing certain genres, albums, or artists without the need to have them organized into the same folder for those.

For example, if I were to add a bunch of music to my phone without any organization at all, Android Auto would still be able to group together songs by the same artist or songs on the same album. With the thumb drive, I'm willing to bet that you would need to create a folder will all songs on a specific album to play that album or all songs from a specific artist.

But for me, if I had a vehicle with Microsoft Sync or another app that would allow me to do the things I mentioned above, then I would definitely go with a USB drive. But without that available, I would definitely have to go with the Android Auto and my phone. It doesn't work quite as well since they forced the change to YouTube Music App from Google Play, but still works better than just using your thumb drive.

I have had 64gb drive, only 32gb used. Close to 6000 songs and around 550 albums. The key is getting the naming format right, but there are apps for that now. Most of my music was ripped from CDs back when file naming was willy-nilly. Pushing the little assistant button and asking for an album or artist works pretty well.

    Oh look, another mod....

The radio has a built in feature that lets me select "Sort By" Genre, Folder, Artist, Song Title, etc...

Now, I have a free program on my laptop called MP3 Tag. I use that to put in allllllllllll the information manually so that I can use all the features. I put the name of the song for "title", the list the Artist, album (if I know the album) and any other content I choose. After that's done, I high light all the songs and tell it to number them from 1 - 999999. The Entune radio also lets me sort by track number.

I've got a 2020 with a 16 gig stick in it. About 800 songs. Set on 'random'... Works just fine. I like the USB stick over Bluetooth as, It's not using any resources/memory on your phone.
