You all do realise race stuff burns alcohol or ethanol whatever you want to call it.

    I said 93, meant 91.

Yes, but it's fresh. The issue is the short shelf life.

For me, its nearly 80c more per gallon for 93 vs 87. So I do not go with the 93. I ran 93 a couple times just to see if I saw any difference. The truck does seem to 'like' the higher octane.

I would like to run non-ethanol fuel also just for kicks. The stations near me have non-ethanol and also the '88' octane fuel. I'm not sure we can run the '88' in the Taco though.

I have a personal conspiracy theory that manufacturers are shrinking the size of gas tanks to make EV range look more appealing.

A lot of it has to do with Dateline in the 1980s rigging a Chevy with pyrotechnics to make it seem like gasoline explodes like a Michael Bay movie during a crash.

88 > 87, so there shouldn't be a mechanical issue using it. The computer will adjust the spark if it senses a change is needed.

Your vehicle requires 87 octane fuel. Use it. If you can demonstrate a cost savings, meaning, the mpg with a higher octane fuel offsets the cost of the higher octane fuel, then more power to you, and feel free to use it.

The other wrinkle is ethanol-blend versus pure gasoline. If the octane rating is the same, the energy availability of gasoline is greater than that of ethanol / ethanol blends. Assuming your vehicle's computer can compensate appropriately, you will get better fuel economy per gallon with straight gas over ethanol and ethanol blends. Unfortunately, one must also do the cost / benefit analysis, since pure gas typically costs more than ethanol or ethanol blends, and the extra $$ spent per unit isn't offset by the increase in fuel economy.

If you're going to have your vehicle sit for an extended period of time, fill the tank with pure gas. It won't absorb water / moisture / humidity.

I was just reminiscing how 89 was always 10cent more than 87 and 93 was 10cent more than 89 for my whole life, anywhere I went. I can't remember when that changed. What event?

When gas was under $1.25 / gallon, typically there was a ten-cent difference between grades... The spread grew as the base cost of standard octane increased. I'd argue it was in the early-mid 2000's. I remember in 1999 gas being under $1.00 per gallon in some spots...

I starting buying gas in 1998 and Racetrak gas station was 89 cent, we found out later was because they were adding 10% ethanol to the gas- was unheard of to a high school kid.
I remember gas being down to under $2 not too long ago too.

I’m still on the same tank I bought the truck with that the dealer filled up at their own on site gas pump. Sure it’s crappy gas. I think I’m gonna run a tank of 93 octane. So what’s the verdict? It runs better with 93 vs 87?

I think theres too many variables to really know unless someone puts up some extensive testing. I just give it a lilttle octane upgrade after Ive done super spirited driving to make up for beating up the engine.

Maybe some "influencer" could take a break from slapping bolt on shit to their truck or complaining about Toyota quality and test this. Good for a few hundred thousand views for sure. I know they read these forums.

And add some dyno runs at 87, 89, 91 would be sweet. It would be a big hit with viewers if done well.

This is ridiculous, it’s a turbo motor. Higher octane makes it more efficient, more powerful, and less knock.

    go 91

I normally gas up at Costco, and found they only have two different octanes, one it 93 and the other is 85. The manual states that you should run 87 or better. So I'm stuck paying the higher cost for the 93 if i continue to gas up there. You would think they could bump the 85 to at least 87.

Unless it's diesel if it's got a turbo I'm putting 93 in the tank.

That must be region specific. Costco near me has 87.

Are you at 5000' or higher? That's the only places I've seen 85. Annoys me as well because I use 87 or greater in my motorcycle so often will fill up with 91-93 octane knowing I will end up having to buy 85 in some puny town and I'm banking on keeping the average octane at 87 when I dilute the 93 down with 85.

It *could* be 87 you're filling up with because 85 is the minimum.
