So my battery terminals were looking a little nasty so I disconnected the battery cables and cleaned the cables and the posts thoroughly. Now with the terminals reconnected correctly, my '05 Tacoma will not hold its idle and keeps stalling out. Does anyone have any ideas on the issue or how to fix it?

Does anyone know the reset code that uses the key in the ignition? One of my daughter's cars had this feature, do the tacomas have this feature?

Any check engine lights? Do you have a scan tool?

Double check that battery cable is nice and tight.

Disconnect both terminals, reseat them, and tight the both back down and try again

This is common/normal after disconnecting the battery. Usually takes 2-4 starts to get it running.

    1. Check to make sure the cables are properly attached to the battery

    2. Drive the truck to allow the computer to re-learn. Takes an hour or two for the truck to go back to normal.

So we disconnected the battery again for 10+ minutes, even replaced the positive cable end cause it had a break in it. And still my Tacoma will not hold its idle. As soon as the idle drops below 400rpm it stalls out.

it's normal usually takes 3 or 4 drive cycles for the computer to relearn.

Can we assume the truck ran fine before you removed the cables? No issues prior or was this an issue before now?

Last time I disconnected the battery it did that too, drove around for a while and every time I got to a stop light was afraid it would stall out. Eventually it did, stalled out and died, got really worried as this was after ~30 minutes of driving. After it stalled started right back up and was perfect. Just give it time

If you've replaced the battery cable because of a break in it you should now leave it connected. It shouldn't take more than 2-4 attempts at starting the truck to make it run. The computer resets every time you disconnect the battery and has to re calibrate all over again.

Interesting. My 1st Gen doesn't require this, less tech I imagine. Learn something every day.

Is it throwing a code? Times like this I'm glad I have a cheap obdII adapter to see check what is or is not showing.

Yes the computer needs to "relearn" a few things, but there are hard coded values similar to open vs closed loop. The truck should run, and stay running unless there is something else wrong. I've never heard of this as a normal thing. I've had my battery disconnected. The last time to upgrade my battery cables and rebuild my alternator. Truck fired up fine and ran normal.

was it cold out? cause every vehicle I have ever worked on with efi and being a mechanic myself anytime you disconnect the battery, negative and positive cables and let all power discharge from the ecu it takes a cycle or two for everything to remember how it is programed.

    No.

Bob asked any time there's a thread title of urgent help or vague requests for help and the thread isn't related to a dire need (like a member stuck someplace or broken down) to tag him or report it so a mod can make an appropriate title for the content inside.

That way people who really need help aren't buried under 100 other threads with the same title and someone is just asking what tire pressure to run.

Not cold out. My battery was unhooked for 2 days. Yes the computer needs to relearn fuel mappings for the drivers habits but again the ECU has stock fuel mappings hard coded. The vehicle should start and run some semblance of normal.

Exactly. The truck doesn't need to learn how to run. I have worked on more cars than I could ever count and have never had one do this. There's something more going on, this isn't normal.
