appreciate any ideas or photos of trucks that have racks over their canopy. I am looking to add something for extra storage on the truck. are there any racks that doens require drilling into the canopy?

Are you referring to a fiberglass camper shell, Bestop Soft Topper, roll up tonneau cover, or hard top tonneau cover?

I've yet to see someone make one that wraps around and over the top to hold significant weight but tons of companies make them that bolt in to the top of the cap. What sucks is they have a low weight rating, tend to leak if you do a poor job at sealing them, and what happens most is the clear coat on the cap itself peels from the constant flexing.

I have seen a few which require you to drill on top of the camper shell. I am a little hesitant to do that. but really need extra storage for camping trips.

Right. I wouldn't do it either and like OZ said, I have seen one and it was a custom local build. Issue with them is they're big, heavy and cost lots to ship. Best bet is to find a local fabrication shop that can bend steel tubing to make you one.
