So my 2008 Tacoma makes "humming/rubbing" type of noise ONLY when I'm turning in the front tires. The noise gets worse if I'm making really slow turns. For example, backing out of my driveway, parking lots, etc. My truck is completely stock.

I'll be taking my truck to a local mechanic today and just wanted to get a heads up before I get thrown into the wolves.

    Thanks guys.

sounds like your tires are rubbing. look under the front fenders and see if you can find black marks where the tires are rubbing at full lock. Backing up slowly is generally the worst rub.

My truck is completely stock though. I've been on 265/70/17 for 8 years and never had rubbing issues

Have you checked your power steering fluid? If it gets low the pump will start to make noise when turning, usually what I would describe as a buzz or howl.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Could be a wheel bearing also. Have him check it with the tire and caliper removed.

Does it only do it when turning one way? I would guess wheel bearing as well if so.

Sounds like a wheel bearing, no pun intended. (well, O.K., maybe just a little...)
Mine did the same thing. Fine while going straight, growled on turns.

Mine did the the same while turning right on some turns. Turned out to be the passenger front wheel bearing.

I'm at the shop and they think it's a "rear diff" problem. The rear tires " vibrate" when making slow sharp turns.

Update* I replaced the rear diff oil yesterday. Apparently they didn't add " the friction modifier fluid" ( whatever that is) with the change so they think that could be the problem.

They knew they messed up and they're going to re-do the rear diff again. Does that make any sense to you guys??

Also, I drove around like that all day. Should I be worried that they messed up my rear diff??

Well, IF that doesn't make a difference, have the front wheels spun slowly while it's on a lift, and listen for grinding/crunching noises.
"Friction Modifier Fluid"? Snake oil in a fancy container??

Yeah.. I was like " a what modifier?" Haha. He showed me the rear tires vibrating when turning.

Felt like the truck was in 4wd and trying to make sharp turns. Looked like the tires were sorta "skipping"

    Hopefully this fixes it.

Yep, 2008 has the true LSD, and needs that modifier.

Should I be concern with any rear diff damage? I drove around 20 miles before taking it back to the shop.

I wouldn't worry about it. Have them add the friction modifier fluid and you should be good.

    **Final Update**

It was indeed the " modifier fluid" for the rear diff. My truck feels brand new compare to yesterday.

Thank you for all the replies and I've learned something new today.

    Hi all,

I have a 2018 Tacoma TRD Sport completely stock. When backing up, and turning the wheels to the left or right all the way, and when changing to Drive and straighten the wheels I hear a noice coming from the front. I am not sure if this is normal or if something is not right with the truck? I had a 2016 and it made the same noise, kinda hard to describe but sound like "clacking" sound. I was told by the mechanics a the dealership that this is normal, that it's coming from the drive shaft, that when cold it locks and when changing gears you can hear it. I am so confused . Wondering if anybody else have notice this sound coming from the front.
