Truck Doesn't Have a Pilot Bearing??!!?

    I'm in the middle of a clutch job and went to pull the old pilot bearing out of the back of the crankshaft and install a new one, only to realize there wasn't one already there. It's a 2005 Tacoma with a 2008 transmission that was replaced under warranty at a dealership, and the paperwork shows that they replaced the clutch at the same time. Are these trucks not supposed to have a pilot bearing? The end of the input shaft of the transmission doesn't have a smooth section that would neatly fit into a bearing, which makes me think the tranny isn't designed to work with one, but for some reason every parts catalog I can find lists a pilot bearing. The bearing I have is definitely the right fit for the crankshaft. Is this normal?

    Just to clarify, it has a throwout bearing that I already replaced--it's the pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft that I'm confused about.

    How about a picture of the transmission shaft where you say you don't see a race for the pilot bearing?

    Note: There is definitely supposed to be a pilot bearing there, and if they left it out, that is just BAD. Every transmission input shaft that I've ever seen has had some degree of lateral movement, so without a pilot bearing, there is a good chance that it could engage off-center and do a real good job of pleasing your wife.


    EDIT: I made the stupid mistake of relaying what I know (and the manual supports) about the R155 assembly, when OP was looking for info regarding RA60....

    They don't use a pilot bearing. Never have since they came out in 2005. Aren't designed to use one either.

    Unless you do a T56 swap like me. :D

    I know they make updates, so that must be a new revision. I haven't seen one from '05-'09. Play me some time is past since then.

    With a little clarification from my friend at Toyota, only the 5 speed has the pilot bearing. Not the 6 speed.

    2006 Second Generation.

    After a second look at the manual you are correct the R155 ( imaged above ) does have a pilot bearing where the RA60 does not.

    Enlighten me on the terminology of the RA60, please. I always have known it as the AY6.

    RA60 is the TOYOTA name, AY6 is the AISIN name.
    RA60 is a bit more specific, since in addition to the AY6, it indicates the input shaft and bell housing that are specific to the toyota application.

    WHAT DOES THE PILOT BEARING DO ?
    When you push your clutch pedal down to the floor the clutch disc is pulled away from the flywheel . The purpose of the pilot bearing is to support the radial load of the spinning clutch disc when the clutch disc is moved away from the flywheel . A clutch disc doesnt seem heavy when you hold it in your hands , but think about when you dump your clutch at 5000 rpm . Here is the catch .... Your 6 speed doesnt use a pilot bearing . The input shaft on the 6 speed has been beefed up , the front transmission bearing has been beefed up and the input shaft to output shaft bearing has been beefed up to compensate for the missing pilot bearing . With this said , I still beleive Aisn Warner needs to do a little more homework and in my opinion should have left the pilot bearing in place . From what I can tell ,some of you guys are having far too many release bearing issues and I believe one of the reasons is because of the missing pilot bearing .

    After getting into this thread, I have been thinking the exact same thing. Any looseness of the shaft at all (and I've never seen one that wouldn't move at all) will cause a pretty solid vibration, and that could cause premature failure on that release bearing and sleeve. And its interesting to note that the R155, which has an otherwise similar configuration, has zero track record of such problems.

    It might not be a trivial swap. Are the flywheels even the same diameter? Would the 5-speed bellhousing line up?

    The 6 speed is only sold State side. Everywhere else uses the 5 speed. The same R155 (I believe) So there is a bell housing which bolts up. The 1GR flywheel already has a pilot bearing recess. Might or might not take the one from the R155.

    So the questions are: your flywheel question; is the bellhousing removable; does the 2TR bellhousing have the same bolt pattern to 1GR (highly doubtful); where to source a bell housing of need be; how large a diameter is the clutch and would it have to be a 2TR clutch, or just the hub;

    I actually looked at trying to adapt a pilot bearing. The flywheel side is already set up to do this but the transmission main shaft is the problem. As I recall it is too short and there is little to work with after it passes through the clutch disc.
