    Hi all,

I recently purchased my first Tacoma and am looking forward to utilizing it this summer for camping trips. I am trying to decide between the following camping setups and looking for opinions on pros/cons for each, including both when utilizing for camping, and also any teardown/setup required to utilize the truck for daily use as well.
    1. Cab-high truck cap with mattress in bed of truck.
    2. Bed rack with rooftop tent.
    Thanks for your thoughts!

I have a cap. My wife and I utilize the bed with a thick memory foam mattress topper for camping trips. Works great for us.

pros... we can utilize the truck for day trips without the need to breakdown a roof top tent.

cons... storage space inside the truck is limited once setup for sleeping.

Why not both. There are tops that you can buy that are roof top tent friendly, the brackets fit around the top.

I agree. That's what I'm looking to do. First I'll get a topper and later/maybe I'll get a RTT. Before I get the RTT I'll sleep in the bed or rough it in a regular tent. If I don't mind it without the RTT, I'll skip the RTT. Then I'll save enough to do some extra trips. :D

I also want a topper to have storage during winter. Without one the bed just becomes a snow dumpster.

Most people go with a soft topper and bars that fit snug around the sides, it’s a clean look and if you want, the tent is easily removable from the top.

Have both a cap and a rooftop tent, with drawers built in beneath a bed platform, in an access cab. Sleeping in just the cap is nice on one or two night trips, especially when we’re light in gear, because it’s easy enough to throw a backpack or two into the cab. On longer trips the rooftop tent is easier because the gear can just stay in the bed.

Thanks everyone, I think I'm leaning towards a Leer 100XR cap with roof racks to start out. I'm thinking this gives me the option to mount a rooftop tent on top of the cap in the future.

I am thinking to go this route as well. I just placed an order for Snugtop Rebel to try this out. Make sure you order the reinforcement package (hold up to 500 lbs)if you plan to have RTT

6ft or 5ft ? Personally I would do a tonneau cover and a rack with the rtt . With the rtt you have more head room and space to move around to change and so on .

Bed size would be the deciding factor for me...

    I went with the canopy.
