So I was poking around on the interwebs and came across the truckvault website and some of their storage and security solutions piqued my interest. The image attached is one of their products I found on Google Images. What didn't really do it for me was the price. For the application and frequency I would use something like that, I could probably make a locking container to fit the length of the bed for way cheaper that would be modular enough to be removable, but secure enough to dissuade the casual thief. I'm not going for Fort Knox style security, just something to throw hunting rifle cases and hunting gear in so I can drive with my buddies and not have to worry about throwing our stuff into the cab when we stop for gas or food. Anyone out there already fabricate something similar or have any inputs? I was thinking I'd probably start putting something together in the next few months. Whatever I end up doing I'll add to TW for anyone's future reference with dimensions for a 2nd gen short bed. Any advice would be appreciated!

But you dont need a pop lock for the gate as most tonneaus have to be opened before the gate.
Also, this vault thing dedicates your truck as being a Brink's truck, what happens when you need to move a couch or haul a yard of gravel?

    Limiting if you ask me.

I agree the vault takes over the bed. I wouldn't like that.

My tonneau is opposite. It locks shut, but opens only if the gate is open.

I guess only the fiberglass ones cover the gate.

My tonneau is the same as well, only opens when the gate is open...I got the soft tonneau because I put my motorcycle in the bed of the truck on occasion, and I didn't want to have to remove the fiberglass tonneau. And yes, the vault would take up a lot of space, but the way I was thinking of constructing it would be between the wheel wells and only bolted to the bed in four places. So if I wanted to remove it, four bolts out, and slide it outta the bed. I was also thinking to make it outta wood so it'd be lighter than the steel boxes.

I just found something like this...its from a Honda CRV. I'd go taller, and I'd need to make it lockable, but this is pretty close to what I was imagining.

I picked one of these up off of craigslist a couple weeks ago for $200. I found a few others for $4-600, so they are out there. I'm planning on using it as the base of a sleeping platform and drawer system. My last drawer system was made of 3/4" plywood. Even with it coated in Raptor Liner spray on bedliner it delaminated in only a few weeks. Broke my heart. This go around I'll be using either Duraply or MDO. Both are supposed to be weather proof. Wish I had known then what I know now.

SGTCap, thanks for the tip and the pic. How much were you looking to spend on the MDO or Duraply? I saw a sheet of MDO for 50 bucks...have you found it cheaper anywhere? I'll also have to keep an eye out on craigslist as well. Thanks again!

More than that. The only MDO I've found was 2hrs away and 65/sheet for 3/4". There's Duraply locally for $95. If you can get MDO for $50 jump on it. Make sure its MDO ( medium density overlay) not MDF (medium density fiberboard). I had a lumber company get confused and quote me for the wrong product. MDO is weather proof. MDF is like a sponge.

MDO is weather resistant , no wood product is weather proof

Touchè. The combination of either and spray on bedlinner will hopefully be close enough.

⬆ MDO is just an exterior grade plywood with a paper overlay to give a paintable surface. You can get it with one or both sides overlaid, but the edges are not. Those edges and any cut edges are unprotected. It's no different from any wood product; it needs a weatherproof finish with extra attention paid to the edges.

This is my cheaper solution. $200 on Craigslist. I found a couple others, all $400 and under.
