Please. I am having trouble seeing the back of the air filter box so I’m not getting it closed right. Also, what is the other filter in there besides the air filter!

Which filter do you have? The standard one with the triangular filter or the TRD one with the rectangular filter?

Either way there should be claws on one side/end and latches on the other.

    Pictures would help significantly.

The secondary "filter" can be removed* it is a charcoal pellet screen to trap fuel and combustion vapors that try to escape the cylinders through the intake when the truck is shut off.

*May violate state/federal emissions and cause you to fail smog.

It’s claws in first angled with the latch side slightly open, then latch side in then latched. If it’s not closing maybe the claws are broken off.

I read in here somewhere “it’s proven” removing the secondary filter provides no gains. I’m not sure how they proved it. You’d think less restriction would equal more power.

    It really doesn't.

I saw on some Scion forum years ago that with forced induction removing it netted roughly 1hp which realistically is within margin of error given testing methodology.

To really affect the the intake path it would have to have less surface area than the throttle body, the engine can only pull as much vacuum as it can pull through the throttle body or it's smallest restriction your intake air charge already goes from a higher velocity to a lower velocity to an even higher velocity as it passes through the larger diameter/volume air filter chamber, and then is choked back down to that 2 3/4 diameter of the intake piping to the 2 5/8 throttle body.

If you were FI it would have more impact and while in a sterile scientific vacuum environment I'm sure it's measurable but real world you're only likely to notice more noise.

That said I tore mine out, it was dirty and after 7 years and 200k+ miles I'm pretty sure it was at the end of it's life.

That’s a good saying “less restriction equals more power “. In most respects this is true. I’m not going to take it out yet. The truck has over 300,000 miles on it and I replaced the maf because it had some corrosion on one of the wires. Now it runs badly! What made me check the maf was that the engine light and trac off light came on and stayed on. I also had disconnected the battery and the lights went away but came back. I guess that I’ll have NAPA check the sensor they sold me

Yeah, Toyota's really only like OEM sensors, especially the MAF, they're just more sensitive. If you still have your old one and had no codes with it I would reinstall it and just clean it with some CRC MAF cleaner.

I had cleaned it before I decided to buy a new one (or tried to clean it-the stuff didn’t come off and I traded it in)

Sometimes you have to wiggle the air filter around, it will get caught on the edges and if you try to force it closed, you could break the plastic that holds the clamps. This is assuming you are talking about the 2.7 air filter box.

Trying to replace the filter on a cold day can be challenging. I wait until it is hot out and the plastic tube and other pieces are less rigid. Temporarily removing the anchor bolts of the big tube can also help.

Oops, so the old one is gone? You might have to shell for an oem Toyota.
