after a ton of searching i wasn’t able to find what i was looking for, there were some threads on putting sport turn signal side mirrors on sr5s and putting 4runner turn signal side mirrors on tacomas to get heated mirror and puddle light but not what i’m looking for

    my need is more simple

i believe 2nd gen tacomas 2012-2015 years in the trd SPORT came with side mirrors with led turn signals (led mounted in the side mirror) from the factory. while trd OFFROAD models 2012-2015 had side mirrors without turn signals (aka regular side mirrors).

we have a 2013 trd offroad with regular side mirrors without led turn signals mounted in the side mirror.

my buddy has a 2013 trd SPORT with side mirrors that have led turn signals inside them and replaced the factory mirrors with tow mirrors. so i got my friends side mirrors from his 2013 trd SPORT that has led turn signals integrated into the mirror

got the offroad side mirrors off and installed the sport mirrors.

electric adjust for mirror is working on both sides but the turn signal led on both sides does not work.

we are hoping someone has ran into this and we presume some things

    1. the trd offroad has the same side mirror wiring harness as the sport, even though the sport mirrors have turn signal leds, we presume toyota put the same wiring on the offroad and sport, but we could be wrong

    side mirror wiring harness comparisons

OFFROAD wiring pigtail from the mirror
    -
driver // 3 wires to the mirror
passenger // 3 wires to the mirror

we presume 3 wires is one power wire for the 2 electric motors and one ground?

SPORT wiring pigtail from the mirror
    -
driver // 5 wires to the mirror
passenger // 5 wires to the mirror

we presume for the 5 wires is this maybe
    1-power wire for horizontal motor
    1-power wire for vertical motor
    1-ground
    1-led power wire
    1-led ground wire?

so our OFFROAD mirrors have a pigtail with 3 wires total going to the side mirror while the SPORT mirrors have 5 wires total going to the side mirror, the connector the side mirror pigtail plugs into accepts BOTH the offroad and the sport mirror pigtails so we just presumed everything MAY work.

anyone that can help we appreciate it, maybe the offroad model does not have wiring included in the factory harness for turn signals in the side mirrors or maybe theres a fuse or relay we need to ADD to the offroad model to ‘complete’ the turn signal side mirror circuit

IF there is no factory harness or wiring in our offroad model for side mirror turn signals maybe someone can tell is the easiest location of where to tap into the factory turn signal LEFT AND RIGHT wires and also if anyone can tell us what the 3 wires on our offroad pigtail are (which wire is what? 12volt?ground?) and also what the 5 wires on the sport pigtail are (which wire is what? led positive? led negative?)

    thanks yall!!

You need to run two more wires into the cab on each mirror

good information i’m looking over it now, think most surprising is where the side mirror pigtails plug into the side mirror connection on the door, the door side connector has 5 wires while the offroad non turn signal side mirror has 3 wires. so the door side has wires the offroad mirror pigtail doesn’t even have.

and the sport turn signal mirror has 5 wires so it -looks- like the offroad model is prewired to support sport turn signal mirrors. why would a offroad model have 5 wires at the door connection that plugs into a offroad side mirror pigtail that only has 3 wires going to the mirror? seems odd

85% of the parts are the same on offroad models and sport models including many of the same wiring harnesses, not all but many.

i need to get a multi meter on the door connector pins to see what each of those 5 wires bolts is, ground, etc.

the link for the mirror did help but it’s really vague, that post didn’t say

    1. how he i clipped the mirror outer shell
    2. where he connected to the led with his custom wires as leds tend to have tiny wires
    3. he didn’t want to use FRONT turn signals due to daylight running lights use the FRONT turn signals. so how and where he found the REAR turn signal wires, yes it shows a pic of the rear wires but it’s alittle vague
    4. i will have to check how the front turn signals and daylight running lights behave as i may want to use the front turn signal wires for side mirror turn signal power wires.

their behavior will dictate how their wiring works and if it will be usable for the side mirror turn signal power. ie. if the front turn signals are dimmed for DRL and ON all the time then they probably should not be used to power side mirror turn signal power wires. probably why the guy used the REAR turn signal wires.

i believe front turn signals behave as such

    1. when DRL switch is ON, both front turn signals get 12volts (or maybe 12volts at less amps for DRL) or maybe the turn signal bulb is a dual filament bulb, a low light filament and high light filament. which means when DRL is ON then the LOW filament is powered by 12v. and when DRL is ON and you use the turn signal then the low filament is turned off and the high filament is sent a blinking 12volts positive for the turn signal.

    why does this matter?
because i may be interested if i can send a lower amp 12v to the led to keep side mirror led on (dimmed) when truck is running and a higher amp (brighter) when the turn signal is activated.

or i may just use the REAR turn signal wires for simplicity. just trying to understand how the turn signal circuits behave with daylight running circuit.

i’ll keep researching while i make a plan or test

It's my diy thread so I'll help you the best I can.
    1) I used a plastic pry tool to pop off the shell of the side mirror.
    2) If I remember correctly I think I used a mini Dorman Conduct tite which plugged into the turn signal and a rubber heat shrink tubing over both wires so they didn't touch.
    3) I found the rear turn signal wires by checking their continuity.
    4) I went with the rear turn signals because I found somewhere on here were a member wired his turn signals to his front signals/drl and they were consistently on since his drl were consistently on as well.
    5) As for the 5 wires and only 3 wires running to the mirror, I can't help you on that, I looked everyone and couldn't find anything on it.

Hope this helps and good luck.

wow that information helps thank you!

    questions

    1. why pry off the shell? was it to connect to the led wires to run power and ground to the led? if so, the led wires -i think- run out of the side mirror pigtail, so why did you need to pry the shell off to get to the led wires? why not just find the led wires in the pigtail and run your power and ground to those wires?

    2. you used a meter to find your rear turn signal wires but how did you know what harness to start looking at wires and testing 12v pulsing when turn signal is on? how did you know where to start looking at harnesses? and when you found the wires was it a 12v positive pulse, on then off then on then off, when turn signal is activated? just curious if the signal is a pulsed +12v POSITIVE or if it was a pulsed ground NEGATIVE.

    1) Yeah I tried tapping into the pigtails first but I couldn't figure out where the other side was connected to so I figured it was easier to just run my own wires.

2)I pulled off the tail light and used an electrical wire tester. So one end clamps on to the wire and the other side is a wand that beeps whenever I'm near the other end of the wire. So that helped me figure out which set of wires to check. Not sure if I checked the Voltage, my main focus was just finding that rear turn signal wire lol.
