TRD Sport sticker without the features?

Hey guys I first want to thank anybody who can help me out with this question I am having.

So I went and looked at a 2008 Tacoma today. With 186k miles the truck was in amazing condition with zero rust and almost perfect body and interior. However, I’m beyond puzzled about one thing. The truck has a trd sport sticker on the rear quarter panels yet the truck does not have any “sport” features. The truck has basically all the features of the off road package minus the rear diff lock. It has the towing package, which I check by looking for th per trans cooler, oil cooler, etc.

My question is, did Toyota make a sport package without the hood scoop, matching bumpers and grill and the larger wheels. The truck is not an SR5 which makes me think it could be a sport package, just not the SR5 package? I posted a link the dealer site where the truck is located. I hope all this makes sense and that somebody can help me out because the truck is EXACTLY what I want, even down to the color and my budget.

    Thanks again!

    Michael

Also, I got a Carfax report and there are no accidents reported on the truck and it has been through 3 owners so far.

It's not a TRD Off Road, nor a TRD Sport. Those are OEM TRD Sport decals, so those rear fenders were probably salvaged from a real TRD Sport.

That looks like my 06 with all the same trim. Sport should have scoop and color matched grille, mirrors and rear bumper. Barring having to have all those parts replaced it looks like somebody just slapped the sport stickers on the bedsides. :notsure: nice truck tho!

So could this truck be a base model? It doesn’t have any steering wheel controls but does have all power windows, 4x4 and power mirrors.........

Dandied up sr5, even though the description lists differential lock, there is no button for it, or the inverter/outlet in the bed. Some sr5 came with the off-road wheels. Plus the seats don’t look like the trd versions. A very well optioned sr5 with decals on the bed, which is basically what the sport is anyways(it should have better shocks by now at 186k)

Mine's the base model sr5 and it has all the same stuff inside and out that you're describing.

Definitely not a Sport. It does have cruise control though so I’m thinking SR5.

I just found a list of all the packages and things you could get from Toyota and you guys are right. It does seem to be a base with the added tow and SR5 packages. Somebody must have just wanted to be cool with the stickers.

From what I can tell it has the dimpled dash panels. Wasn't that TRD thing?

Remember, more than one used car dealer dirt bag has added stickers to a vehicle to increase its value. Let the buyer beware.

Question about your comment that the seats don't look like TRD. What's the difference? Is it just the covering material or are they different dimensions? I ask because I have seat covers from my prior '12 PreRunner and I haven't tried them on my '15 TRD OR yet, wondering if there will be a problem.

I completely agree! The salesperson had no idea what I was talking about when I mentioned that the sticker didn't match the truck. Either they were just playing dumb they literally had no idea what I was talking about.

Any number of things could have been done. You can try searching the VIN to see what it is.

They may have taken a Sport and took away the scoop and color matched parts or simply put a Sport bedside decal on an SR5. You can buy the decals online. I’m thinking the latter.

It has the SR5 package but with 3 owners and over 180K miles in 10 yrs, no telling what this truck has been through. Personally, it's overpriced, high mileage, questionable history, and I would keep looking.

that is not a TRD Sport it is a base with stickers and TRD off road wheels added. The seats are not sport seats, no hood scoop, no color keyed grill and the rear bumper is not color coded to the truck those are the first two keys that it is not a TRD. I don't even think that is an SR5 but that I could be wrong on but I can say for sure that is not a TRD.

Funny you posted this because I just finished doing a VIN decoder. Everything checks out. It is infact a base model with the added tow package and to get even more specific is had the SR5 #8 package as well. The #8 package adds all those little things like fog lights, cruise control, chrome grill/bumper, etc. Seems everything checks out other than whoever thought it would be funny to put a sport sticker on the back.

BTW: You guys will know a little more about pricing than I do right now but the dealer just quoted me $12,900 OTD. I already have plates and I will pay my DMV tax myself. Thoughts?

I’d try to get them down to under $10,000. It’s got over a 186K miles on it regardless of condition. Good Luck!
