What’s the consensus on decal sets like this one:

    https://empyreoffroad.com/products/2016-2019-toyota-tacoma-sport-wheel-decals-blackout-kit

I searched the forums and found a few dated threads with people selling them via eBay or Etsy. It seems that initial reviews were generally positive but I’m curious how they look after months or years of use?

I have a stock 22 TRD Sport and don’t have any plans to install a lift and the current rims/tires seem decent enough for now. But I like the blacked out look and was looking for an effective way to mimic it without buying new rims (for cost but also the learning curve of figuring out what rims to get to keep a stock stance/size/stance/etc.).

Has anyone used these and have a long term review? If so, any specific vendor to use?

Nay; I prefer the look of my unadorned Sport rims.

Im in the same exact boat as you. Not going to lift, and dont want to spend a ton of dough on new wheels right now.
I ordered a set from flatsixgraphics on Etsy. He gives you 5 sets (1 extra) in case you mess up. Also, his are oracal 951 and many others are are 651. Not sure if that makes a difference, but its something I noticed.
I havent received them yet, but just ordered last week. Also, I probly wont be able to install for months as its cold here and they recommend 60-80 degree weather.
From your name, I assume your Ohio and its cold there now too...
Seems like all the reviews Ive read state that they are only as good as your prep and install. Dont hurry, take your time, do it right, and they will last. I guess we will see....
In my opinion, even if they only last a year or so (Im hoping longer), they are inexpensive so it doesnt hurt much to replace. And if they are total junk, then only out 40 bucks and a little time.

Thanks for the info. I’ll check out that seller and maybe pull the trigger. Like you said, it’s not huge money so if they fail then so be it - as long as they can be removed without too much pain.

And yes - located in SW Ohio. Temps are mild right now but will drop again soon. I doubt we’ll see consistent 60s anytime soon so I suppose there’s no rush as this would be a better spring or summer project.

I agree - which is why I’m looking for long term reviews on decal longevity; not so much opinions on aesthetics.

I saw someone on another thread say these blackout decals were still on and looked decent after 3 years. No personal experience. Seems like a no lose option: cheap and if they fall off who cares, if they look bad peel em off.

That’s my current rationale as well. Thanks for the feedback.

Have you looked around for a place to powder coat your rims? That’s my plan for the summer

I haven’t - but I wouldn’t know where to start either. My immediate, uneducated reaction is that by the time you take tires off, powder coat, re-tire, balance, and mount would it be much cheaper than just buying new rims? I need to do some research on that - maybe it’s not that involved/pricey though?

If it were only that easy…

No Softopper yet. Most of the used ones I see are for short beds are too far away to mess with. I’m in no huge hurry so I’ll just sit tight and see if something pops up closer to home.

I put them on my last Tacoma wheels, but not sure where I bought them. Definitely use Oracal 951. It's cast vinyl that will apply easier and last longer than 651.
Easiest way will be to remove the wheels, wash them well, and then lay them flat on a table. I did mine on the kitchen counter...
Use a few drops of baby shampoo in a small spray bottle to apply them.
After all of the water is pushed out, use a hair dryer or heat gun to make sure every edge is sealed down tight.
If you do a good job they will hold up for years.
If you do it carelessly, they won't last.
