Looks like the TRD premium oil filter is exactly the same as the amsoil oil filter down to the last detail beside TRD being stamped into the Toyota branded one. I thought this was interesting .

Oh man, can't wait for the crowd of sheep to tell you that they would only ever use genuine OEM filters installed by a master technician at the dealership, with imported Japanese oil.

Installed by high school kids lol. TRD filters are sold and made by Toyota that’s the best part and identical to amsoil

They're identical, the royal purple should be the same as well. I have a pic of all three side by side archived somewhere. I've even counted the pleats. I believe champion manufacturers the filter

I’ve been a user and preferred customer of Amsoil for many years. As much as I like their products I’ve been using Toyota OE oil filters on my Tacoma. I bought my first bunch of oil filters at a price less than I could get the Amsoil equivalent so I’ll probably stick with OE.

The amsoil appears to have tighter pleats and a slightly thicker o ring. Maybe it's just the picture though. I've always used the plain oem filters with valvoline 0w-20 full synthetic. Cheap and works just fine. :burnrubber:

Amsoil is a little more expensive even with a preferred discount. There was a shortage of trd filters a while back where I ended up using royal purple/amsoil instead. I usually go with trd though because it's the cheapest and I have a dealer close by

Plus it’s “made” by Toyota so any issues it’s on them

If you guys don't know, Champion Laboratories manufactures the same filter for STP, Mobil 1, K&N, and a few other well known brand names. This is probably the case for AMSOIL and TRD.

I have a related question... since the oem filter doesn't have these metal caps and o-rings on the ends, how does it seal at the ends? Always wondered.

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
That right there is funny. I don't care who you are.

Just like their oil, they're not made by Toyota.

They are provided by the low bidder who meets their specs and branded for Toyota. Just another channel for profit.

toyota is an auto maker not a filter maker

Mann, hengst, mahle, Meyle, etc are parts and filter makers that car companies use and provide specifications to

I have a bridge to sell you

People don’t seem to understand how many components on their truck are made FOR Toyota not BY Toyota. Same can be said for all manufacturers vehicles.

what do you mean my Bosch O2 sensors, Denso A/C, NSK bearings, and Sylvania bulbs weren’t handforged by a samurai on a mountain top

I've only used the Toyota OEM filters because of that one thread on TW that compared the many aftermarket filters vs OEM. I think it was on TW? However, I just did my 60k service and switched all my oil/fluids to Amsoil. I think the Amsoil filter is shorter than the OEM?

It uses the end cap as the seal.

But now that you're likely concerned about blow-by around the filter, look up 'oil filter bypass spring'. Every filter has one, and every filter uses it. You're never filtering 100% of all oil all the time.
