Hey everyone, I’m shopping for a new 3rd gen, and given the scarce availability I have a tough time finding a TRD PRO to test drive so I figured I’d reach out to the PROs here ;).

Does the PRO have significantly better on road ride Vs Off Road trim?
    What about off road?

On road is about 70% importance to me, and off road 30%.

If no discernible difference I’ll likely go with the off road, since they are way easier to find and mechanically identical (minus wheels and skid plate, exhaust)

    thanks in advance !

I have a offroad with a pro suspension, The pro suspension feel way better than the offroads suspension. But, if you dont care about having a pro, I would get a offroad and use the money saved to put on a pro suspension, or something else aftermarket.

Buy the odd road and use the difference in price to buy an aftermarket suspension that will ride better than the pro on and offroad.

yeah the Pro ride quality is head & shoulders nicer out of the box, BUT, i absolutely would not let that guide my decision. truth is the TRD Foxes are cheap crap when you get into good offroad shocks and you can get better for cheaper or more expensive depending on what you want. easy change!

Oh interesting, can you describe what “way better” means? Is it softer ? Better at absorbing bumps ?

Interesting, so trd foxes are not as good as Fox’s 2.5 set ? I figured it was the same thing just from OEM, I am not big on modding especially when I’m spending 40 or 50k on a rig, I wanted it to be set up out of the box.

Throwing $2500 in shocks seriously narrows the price gap between the two.

it comes down to what you want in the end. the Pro suspension is a good notch more controlled with its dampening and the OR is a bit softer, but both are soft and will dampen anything. does that matter to you? if it really does, i suggest the cheaper truck and aftermarket suspension.

Ride quality is pretty important. If the pro rides noticeably better than “this is the way”. I was curious about the “cheap” comment though. What’s “cheap” about the fox shocks they are the biggest selling feature of the pro ?

I would describe my 2019 Pro's ride as "firm but compliant". It is not soft, you feel the bumps in the road like a sports car, but it also absorbs huge bumps offroad without bottoming unlike a sports car. But doesn't absorb them like a dirtbike where you barely feel huge bumps. Get an offroad if you want a softer ride on dirt and street.

that's just subjective, they may be cheap to me [and many others] and considered upgrade-worthy by many as well. i enjoyed mine while they lasted, but i struggled to get the truck to perform as i wanted. by 56k my Foxes were completely dead, 3 of the 4 leaking, and that's not unusual at that mileage. but when i upgraded into better performing shocks it blew my mind how much performance i was missing, and that was out of the box without much tweaking. i would have considered tuning the Foxes, but Fox themselves told me they don't respond well to tuning and they typically offer stock rebuilding only. i wasn't interested in that so i left them behind.

Theyre not the same as the generic Fox 2.5s. The difference being is you can get them for the same price as the generics, but they have been tuned specifically for the Tacoma. Fox works with Toyota to develop them, theyre not an after thought or just cheap variants with stickers on them. The also come booted so there's less risk of piston scoring.

I have them on my Pro and have been in Tundras with the generic Fox 2.5s there is a slight difference, with the stock Pro stuff being slightly softer and more comfortable feeling.

Basically the decision is between whether you want a softer and better valved set or whether getting the ride height up front is more important. You could always revalve, but thats not cheap either.

I can pick up the Pro Foxes for ~$2500 locally, the generic valving ones without adjusters are $2800. Tacomas kinda get shafted a bit on lift though, my Tundra is lifted 2" whereas the Tacomas only get 1" from the Pro stuff.

Its feels like going from driving a old honda accord to driving a new lexus. The road control feels way better, large bumps on the highway no longer cause the truck to bounce and drift.

Don’t get the Pro if you are going to upgrade the components anyhow. The pro has nothing that can’t be done as good or better to that OR.....except the VIN number...lol.

2500 worth of aftermarket will be better than the fox pro shocks. And you can buy fox pro takeoffs for less than 1500 if you really want them.

The point was to not upgrade and get the “better setup” from the factory. Hence the thread and the question. I have driven a trd off road and found the ride fine, but if the PRO is better I’m willing to pay extra. Buying an off road and adding $1500/2800 in shocks seems wrong to me when I get that from the pro out of the box

    You’re not it’s a valuable learning experience.
The last thing I want is to buy a 50k unobtanium rig with upgraded shocks only to find out that they suck. That’s why I’m doing my research.

I had a 18 OR and have a 19 pro now. The personally I think that they are just....different...in ride quality.

Off road, the foxes are better. Period. When I say off road, I don’t mean a dirt road. I’m talking hanging on with two wheels and resting on a skid plate.

On the road, I think like I feel little things on the road more, it’s stiffer for obvious reasons, less body roll, but handles hitting dips at speed mo bedda and has little to no brake dive which was something I personally hated about the OR. Obviously it sits a inch higher in the front, I don’t notice the difference. But the little hood scope is annoying to me to look past when trying to precise about something when driving.

I just did the swap from OR to PRO on my 2019, OR was stiffer, and PRO is soft. I dont really feel the bumps but i can now tell the nose dips a little when braking. Or maybe i am braking to hard now, or also be i been driving my 1997 4runner to much this month.... I cant remember if the OR did the same, but i am now knitt picking everything.
