TRD Off Road - Premium Options Worth it?

I'm looking at getting either a Gladiator or Tacoma TRD Off Road. I'd prefer leather seats, but the only way to get them on a TRD Off Road is to pay for the TRD Premium Off-Road Package which ranges from $5-7k. After adding that option the turck comes out to about $45k. At that point should I ust get the TRD Pro for a few thousand more? I'm just worried that when I go to sell it, it'll be the highest price TRD Off Road and it'll be harder to sell, because leather or cloth, it's still just a TRD Off Road at the end of the day. At least with the TRD Pro, they start at a higher price and obviously sell at a higher price. At least when I run a KBB on a 2019 TRD Off Road and put in the options that come on the TRD Premium Off Road Package, it says it's only worth $1k more than one without, so that's a lot of money to loose when you're paying $5-7k for that option.

Only you can know if the price is worth it to you.

For me, it was worth it to get the Premium packages for leather seats. I thought about doing aftermarket upholstery or seat covers but at the end of the day I figured that you also get other stuff with the Premium packages and it ends up being a better value in the long run for durability and resale. If I could have just had the leather seats without all the extra Premium stuff, I would have. But I was able to afford it, so I did it. I don't regret it.

By the way, once you get into the Premium package, the dealers basically get them fully loaded... So you'll end up with Advanced Tech and other stuff too. For my area, at least.

It might feel like you're "just a few thousand" away from a Pro, but for my area that wasn't the case. TRD Offroads can still be marked down to invoice, Pros go for above sticker. $10k was too much for the upgraded suspension, personally. And that's a significant amount above a TRD Offroad.

    Best of luck.

Don’t pay for the package and just have a Katzskin dealer install leather for 2k and call it day.

Agree with Suspender. I got my TRD OR 3 weeks ago with the premium package for $39,5K, over $5k off sticker. I had to purchase a truck that was on the way to the port. When it got to the dealer 4 weeks later I picked it up the same day. They can't keep TRD OR's or Sports on the lot and they are still discounting them heavily. I was also looking at a Pro that would not arrive for 6 week and they were not discounting it at all. For me it was about having the same level of "niceties" that I had in my Sierra Denali.

From what I've been told, you are right about a highly optioned lower model having a lower resale value than a non-optioned higher model. It's not entirely apples to apples with Tacomas, but that's what I understand about F-150s - dealerships are going to base their offer on the truck being a Lariat or Limited or whatever regardless of how close the lower model might be to being the next model up due to the options.

Basically, if resale is a primary concern, then, yeah, you might be better off going for the Pro.

Depends if you’re used to it, and/or if you can live without it.

I have zero extra bullshit on my Tacoma. Yes, I am cheap, but coming from a 98 Toyota Corolla, Bluetooth and push to start was quite the upgrade.

Don’t ever wish I had heated seats, leather or blind spot monitoring. I do kind of wish I had a moonroof when I drive at night though to see the stars.

That said, if i decided I need all those options and was paying close to $40k for one, I would fork up the extra $5k and get a Pro

If you are worried about resale value I would say just get clazzios... when someone is looking to buy a used car there’s very few people (in my opinion) that would pay much more just for leather seats... I recently bought a used Taco and I had a list of must haves which were 4x4, TRD Off Road and Manual. Everything else I was open depending on the deal... If you plan on keeping the Truck for a long time and are dead set on leather then forget about resale and worry about what will make you happy. :fistbump:

I think you are suppose to get the pro, sell the suspension and wheels, and then you have an OR with a PRO vin

But really, if it’s only for the leather, get leather installed

    Not enough
The truck will hold it's value in the used market no matter what the trim level. For me, the premium/tech package was a no go on a DCLB OR since you had to get it with a sunroof.

If you want leather, I would go aftermarket unless you want anything else that comes with the upgraded packages. Your new buyer probably won't care and if they do, they'll have decent used leather or brand new cloth.

For me the OR was a better value over the PRO since I wanted an aftermarket sound system and suspension anyway. YMMV.

I do not like leather for this vehicle - for my lifestyle (horse farm and travel with a German Shepherd)- I use Carhartt seat covers that I can pull off and wash often. IF I did want leather - I 'd have an upholstery shop put in a nice thick leather (like saddle grade)...I'm sure it'd be very expensive but the other 'stuff'/options for me are unnecessary. If purely for resale - I agree with your assessment - if you're adding a bunch of money for options - that you really do not want and you really just want leather...probably better to have the Pro vin attached to the options. Good luck!!!

    this and that...
for someone who likes to have all the amenities offered, when i bought this truck, it had none. i do gotta say, i dont miss it as much as i thought i would. but this is talking in hindsight. if the options was readily available when i was ready to buy i woulda sprung for it, not even thinking about resale value or anything like that. just simply cause i want it.

I never understand why people look into buying vehicles with reselling as a factor. Lease if you don’t plan on keeping it?

I thought it was worth it especially for the leather and sunroof but I wasn’t that impressed with the JBL upgraded speakers

I often look a resale...I can’t lease as I drive 40-50k miles per year. I also usually buy vehicles 1-2 years old - low miles. The Tacoma did not make sense financially to go that route. I like this truck so much I’ll probably keep it longer than most....in fact I might just keep it till it gives me issues lol. I bought it JAn 19 and have put 67k miles on it so far.

Hi resell can benefit you even if you dont plan to sell, imagine the unfortunate event that your truck gets totaled in an accident. You would get a much better settlement than with something that does not hold its value well.

Go for it! Negotiate the price to 40k and the gap widens from the non negotiable pro and your resale value is a lot closer then when strictly comparing to MSRP. Not sure of the APR difference nowadays but that factors in cost of ownership. In May non pro were 0 percent vs pro at 4ish from TFS.

just rack up miles and maybe Toyota will trade you for a new one like Nissan. You’d have to put more than 1 million though haha

Are we not talking about Tacoma’s? The resale value is known to be good regardless.

what I was referring to was going into a purchase (Vehicle) with resale in mind.

the only time I’ve done that was with real estate.
