Did you take the truck to a Toyota Service Center to have the computer reflashed? If not, nothing is going to change as your truck already had a cold air intake from the factory and the only thing that learns how you drive is the transmission.

Sorry I don't know much about engines. So from the factory it is already a CAI? If so, then what's the difference/benefit of the TRD CAI

Unless they're measuring at the crank no one will.
That 278 is crank. Wheel is probably 250

The extra HP isn't going to count for much if the tranny can't deliver the goods to the wheels.

it's RED and it says TRD on it.

it hooks up to the fender well just like the stock intake. The air comes from the same place

not exactly true. the air inlet on the stock box pulls half its air from the bay. the trd kit's inlet isolates the air from outside the bay and pulls it from the upper wheel well. on paper at least that makes it an actual CAI. no hot bay air.

Stock the truck comes with a poop mans CAI, the TRD CAI is a slightly less restrictive design and pulls all air from wheel well instead part from the engine bay. Is there an actual noticeable/verifiable difference in performance due to the minor changes, probably not but when you open the hood it looks cool.

Interesting how it sounds more like a GS350 when installed.

Funny how people think a CAI is a solution for power. It sounds cool that's about it! The computer and the mass air sensor control the air temp. and fuel mixture.. So without a performance modification to the engine, this does nothing in my opinion. If you looking for 20-40 hp, go to a tuner and have them crank up the motors "enhanced hp" settings. My friend did this to be able to run it in the dunes better and the dyno showed 45 hp increase. MPG obviously went down to 15 mpg

It reuses the lower half of the airbox, which draws air from the fender well. Not sure where this warm engine bay air comes from that you mention. The TRD kit provides a new velocity stack type ring that replaces the stock directional elbow attached to the airbox from fender well.

The velocity stack is made of flexible rubber and creates a sealed fit against the fender sealing it from the engine bay. You actually have to fold it to get it to fit in the fender and spread it back out once the lower intake box is in place. The stock "stack" that is removed is smaller plastic that points into the fender but is not completely sealed off from the engine bay. So...technically yes, you are still pulling in warm air from the engine bay.

Stock pulls from the wheel well not engine bay.

    none yet/none planned! It's perfect!
I have a CAI on my 2007 GT Mustang with a 93 octane tune and it makes a huge difference in how it runs. Throttle response was a lot better and it feels definitely quicker. Get on it at about 4K rpm's in second gear and it will throw the car sideways. Have never checked MPG.

Good thread lots of great information. Planning on installing CAI & Borla exhaust soon, for my experience in the past I loved the results it produced on my LS1 which we're quicker response, better MPG, however most of the noticeable response happened when flooring it. Wont forget to mention the cold start will also be lot more stronger!

Does anyone know what the purpose of this part of the CAI is?

I've seen an number of aftermarket intakes with it. (Including my AFE)
