I went back a few pages to see if I could find the answer
I’m sure some of you have updated the intake to the TRD intake. Was curious if you did a before and after tests.
    Any performance gains?
    Any fuel mileage differences?
I’m sure the motor has a deeper sound during acceleration
Debating if it’s worth the upgrade. thank you for any info

I have it. I didn’t really notice any difference, but my truck is tuned. I would say it’s probably a waste of money unless you really want the look of that black and red TRD air box under the hood. To be fair though, I did not do any real testing other than my butt dyno.

Zero performance gains, just a nice growl at higher RPMs at WOT.

OP, you can always do HPS 57-1600 intake tube.

Buyer beware!!! These won't work with the TRD "Pro" airbox... the distance from the airbox top to the MAF is different... I had to severely trim the tube to get it to fit. That then led to needing a bigger hose clamp.

Note that the airbox won't close in the image below.

if you can live without the fancy red TRD box and tubing, get yourself a Toyota intake flow accelerator (PTR03-35160-AE) and a TRD Performance Air Filter. Those are the "working" parts of the TRD cold air intake kit and will run you about $80 vs $300+ for the kit with the box

Appreciate the info. I guess I will stick with the factory air box. I can save the money for other mods

Oddly enough, I just installed an HPS intake hose along with an intake flow accelerator today. The hose ran about $200 from Extreme Terrain and the accelerator was around $40 after shipping from Sparks Toyota. I can’t speak on the TRD setup, but I notice a boost in performance with my new setup. I’d highly recommend it.

Looked up the HPS cold air intake. Pretty decent numbers from their dyno numbers. Does anyone have fuel mileage improvements to report ?

I noticed no difference in fuel mileage. Except the first few tanks which was worse since I was pedal to the metal constantly because I liked the sound:D
There will be a 100 guys here that'll tell you no gains. Most don't have one installed. And a 100 guys that spent $350+ and say that their definitely are gains.
I'll defer to what Toyotas engineers say, not the dude on the internet and that there is a mild gain which most would probably hardly notice.
I'll take what I can get

I have had mine on coupled with the TRD exhaust and a kdmax tune. I hear a big difference in sound in the mid rpm range, I love the look. It's a nice mod if you have the coins!

Not to hi-jack this thread, but did you notice any gains with the accelerator in place?

If you’re upgrading your intake, buy a snorkel.

I don't think performance upgrades and getting better fuel mileage are mutually exclusive....

    YMMV. No pun intended.

The butt dyno says somewhat, but I haven't gone through verifying it. It could very well be placebo effect, but for $80 it was worth making the butt dyno happy :)

We all like to spend money on our trucks and do fun and relatively easy mods like this. Worth it even if you get little to no gains? Yes if it makes you and your butt happy!

Hehe very true. The problem is every time the UPS or Amazon guy shows up at the door and the wife finds out it's something else for the truck I get the "how old are you?!" dig. And just a little bit ago she had to follow me over to our local ARE dealer where I dropped the truck off to have my new topper installed. It was an "interesting" ride back home LOL.

Looks like you ordered the wrong one. The details on the HPS page say which one works and doesn't work with the TRD air box. I had zero fitment issues with mine.

^^ This. There are two versions of that hose. One for the standard air box and one for the TRD CAI. You have to make sure you order the correct one.
