Hey, my new TRD OR came with a TRD air filter that I didn't have a choice in the matter. I generally would choose less particles entering the engine through a paper filter vs any slight increase in performance from the TRD filter that lets more air (including particles) in.

Any thoughts one way or another if I should just stick with the TRD filter and clean it in time vs get an OEM paper filter or other reputable paper filter for the increased filtration?

I would keep that filter myself..should be way better than a paper filter

The difference is negligible if you clean or replace as needed.
I chose to stick with paper, because I’m lazy.
I don’t want to deal with “cleaning” a filter.

Your engine gets 99.9% of the air it needs just fine from a stock/OEM air filter. Don’t overthink it. Life is short. Enjoy your truck and your life

If you’re even questioning this ($100?) filter forced upon you. You should flip it here or on EBay and cut your losses.

I've used K&N filters for decades without issue. It's your truck do what you want.

The answer is, the one you feel more comfortable using.
I’d use the TRD until I had to clean it.
Then drop in a paper filter. Not because it’s better.
As I said before, I don’t want to clean it.

Seriously, there is no need to worry about which filter is better.
They both filter fine. Chose the one you like best.

I would replace it with a FRAM or OEM. I use FRAM myself

Either Fram from the local parts store or Denso 1433653 if ordering online.

@23MGM the 3.5L V6 uses the same air filter as the Tundra 4.6L and 5.7L V8s. Suffice to say there's no restriction with the stock paper filter.

Since we are now stating what we use, I currently have a Wix filter installed.
    But I’d run a Fram.

If the trd filter doesn't mess up the maf, keep using it. Those k&n filters work fine otherwise.

You should adapt an old oil bath air cleaner. In the long run it would pay for itself

I have used Wix filters of all types, on all types of equipment, and I can’t recall recall a failure because of them. They are sold by NAPA under their gold label and doubt NAPA would risk their reputation on something sketchy.

They seem cheaper made to me when we first started using them over Fram and I’ll use them in a pinch on my personal equipment, but I go with the higher quality I perceive is with the FRAM.

However, I stay away from any oil bath type air filters due to the sensitive nature of MAF, cats and oxy sensors. That however is just me, and I know nothing! lol!

intake mods, firestone airbags, campershell, backup lights,
went with the cai TRD but NOT the k&N type filter there is jus too much dirt
dust and what have you in the air in the southwest. back east where everything
is green you may be able to get away with an oiled k&n filter. But out here the
    OEM works best for longevity.

I’ve had terrible experience with TRD air filter. Dust got into the intake tube from driving off road. Never again I will be using oiled filters, OEM paper filter is the best.
