Transmission whining when accelerating

My truck makes a semi loud whining noise when accelerating. It’s not the power steering pump, sounds like it’s coming from the transmission. I just changed the filter yesterday and it’s still making the noise. Anyone have an idea on what it might be? It only makes the noise in drive, the reverse noise is similar but like a clunky noise.

 

Have you checked the transmission fluid on level ground with the engine hot?

 

yes i just replaced the transmission fluid and filter.

 

Regretfully I'm not much help because I've only ever dealt with manual transmission Tacomas... maybe you could take a recording of the sound and post it up here so someone else more experienced might be able to help recognize the noise?

 

@gearcruncher could probably help, what engine do you have and is it 2wd or 4wd?

 

3.4L 4wd

 

Just a guess but try greasing all your u-joints on your drive shaft. I had a squealing for a while and after I greased everything it went away

First thing we need todo is determine if it is actually your transmission making the noise .
Did you change the transmission filter because you thought the transmission was noisy ?

 

i changed the filter because it’s never been changed before. there was a lot of sludge and metal in the pan and cleaned it all up. i thought it would clear it up but i guess not. i also had someone put in in drive and i was under it listening for the noise sounded like it was the tranny

And the transmission still shifts good ? Whats your mileage ?
The pressure regulator valve in the valve body has been known to get stuck causing valve resonance . Gets very noisy . This is common when the transmission is full of metal and sludge
Another common issue is the torrington bearings in the torque converter .

I highly suggest running the truck with the serpentine belt removed for 4 minutes just to be positive the transmission is the issue . Sounds can transfer making it sound like the transmission but be something else completely .
Just went through this with another member yesterday .
It was his alternator . He thought his transmission was done .

Also , engine needs to be running when you check the transmission fluid level . Lots of guys make this mistake . Your transmission pump will make a lot of noise if you checked the fluid with the truck turned off . You will be 3 quarts low on fluid as well . Sorry but we need to get that out of the way

 

transmission runs smooth mileage is 275000 and the fluid is at the right level

 

the truck makes a weird noise when it’s reverse aswell, it does not sound very good. it’s like a humming whine kind of noise

 

If you want assistance , you need to remove the serpentine belt and run the truck as process of elimination comes into play here . Once we determine your issue is within the transmission , I will try and come up with some quality fixes for you .

OK , you removed the serpentine belt , started the the truck and the noise is still there ....Thank you .
That test alone will save us 2 hours of typing

Is there a chance you could post a video of the sound ?
Does it make the noise in park if you hit the gas ?
will it make the noise in forward with your foot on the brake pedal .... no wheels turning ? bring the revs up to 1500 , but dont allow the wheels to spin ?
Will it make the noise in reverse with your foot on the brake pedal ...no wheels turning ? bring the revs up to 1500 , but dont let the wheels spin ?

 

I've noticed some whining when I am driving at highway speeds in 4wd, probably just needs some grease in some hard to reach place

 

okay so it does not make the noise in park, when i bring it up to 1500 rpms in drive it makes the noise and gets louder, reverse it still makes the noise but a different kind of noise. i’ll post a video of the sound in reverse and in drive.

Well , from what I could make out of your sounds , it sounds like a combination of the transmission pump and the torque converter . In your sound clips , the reverse video was much longer in duration . I cant say I have ever heard a 340 series make that much noise in reverse . I understand the tires are " NOT " spinning .
Reverse uses much higher pressures in comparison to forward and more demand on the transmission pump .

The good news is your are still able to drive the truck and it still shifts .
The bad news . When you had the pan off , that metal that was laying in the pan, covering the magnets has traveled through your transmission for some time now .

The downfall is the transmission pump is going to be all scraped up . Your converter bushings are also worn out and I doubt the transmission is going to last much longer .

I am sorry for the bad news . At this time , you are fine driving around town , but I wouldnt take the truck on any trips .

 

damn, is there anyway to fix the transmission pump and converter bushings.
